England’s Form

This England team had their toughest game of the pool stage in the opening round as they took on a fancied Argentina side. The English silenced their critics by claiming a 27-10 victory over the Argentinians which puts them in pole position to win the pool. In that game flyhalf George Ford was key with twenty-seven points from his boot, the determining factor in a spirited win.

In their most recent Pool D game England got the job done, albeit unspectacularly, with a 34-12 victory against Japan. That victory puts England in pole position to win the group.

George Ford was brilliant again. He made 4/4 conversions and 2/3 penalties. With Owen Farrell returning from suspension he will likely be rested for this game, but it’ll be interesting to see how the two players are rotated in the coming weeks.

World Number 6 ranked England entered this tournament in poor form, finishing fourth in the most recent Six Nations campaign with only two wins to their three defeats. That extended their poor run of form in the competition. Since their 2020 success they’ve come fifth in 2021 and third in 2022.

Steve Borthwick has only been Head Coach of this squad since the 19th of December when it was announced that he would be replacing longtime coach Eddie Jones.

In the first of their World Cup warm-ups, Borthwick’s side fell to a disappointing 20-9 defeat against an out-of-form Wales. However, England avenged that a week later by claiming a narrow 19-17 home victory.  But their final two warm-up matches were defeats. The first was expected, 29-10 against Ireland. The next, 22-30 to Fiji, sent shockwaves through the rugby world.

Chile’s Form

In Chile’s opening Pool D game against Japan they lost out 42-12. Their sole try was scored by fly-half Rodrigo Fernández.

The second game for the Chileans came against Samoa. They didn’t fare any better this time around losing out in an almost identical 43-10 scoreline.

If Chile can keep England to around the 40-points mark again and get themselves over for a try that would have to be considered a successful day for Chilean Rugby.

The South American are the 22nd ranked side in the world. This is their first-ever appearance at a Rugby World Cup having qualified by beating the USA in the final qualifying round.

Not much was expected of this Chilean side led by Pablo Adrián Lemoine who has been in charge since 2018. They’re yet to embarrass themselves in this tournament although England will surely be their toughest test yet.

Key Players To Watch

Owen Farrell

England captain and fly-half Owen Farrell is available for selection for this game following the completion of his suspension. The Saracens clubman will likely be given the starting jersey for this one while George Ford could be given the night off.

Farrell (31) is third in the All-Time England appearances having amassed 107 caps since his debut in 2012. His 1162 points in that span puts him 17 points behind the legendary Jonny Wilkinson for most points scored for England.

Given the performances of Ford at this tournament he will need to put up a performance of the highest order if he wants to get that Number 10 jersey back. A switch to centre to accommodate Ford’s inclusion in the team is a real possibility.

Martín Sigren

The Chile Captain and flanker has started both Pool D games for his nation and you can expect that he will be given his third start of the tournament in this one. Sigren has 37 caps for Chile and 30 points since making his debut in 2016.

Having played rugby for Doncaster Knights he should be familiar with the English style of play.
