Kilkenny came second in Division 1 Group B behind Tipperary in first-place “The Cats” won four matches with their only other match being a defeat in Round 2 to  being beaten by 1-21 to 2-24 by Tipperary. In the regular league phase their 128 points scored which is an average of  25.6 points per match was the third lowest total in their group.

While not shooting the lights out in attack, defensively the Cats were very solid at the back. They had the best defence in their group conceding 102 points which was an average of only 20.4 points per match.

Kilkenny then played Cork in the Division 1 Semi-Final beating them in a 0-22- 2-22 score to qualify for the league final v Limerick where they were out-classed in a 2-20 to 0-15 points defeat. Kilkenny returned to the Leinster Championship last-weekend where they recorded a facile victory over Westmeath on a scoreline of 0-29 to 0-7.

Galway’s Form

Galway came third in Division 1 Group A behind Cork, who surprisingly won the group, and Limerick who came second following Cork’s 0-23 to 0-22 victory in Round 1 over the reigning All-Ireland Champions.

Galway won three of their five matches losing the other two to league leaders Cork and Limerick. In the regular league phase they had the second-best attack with 139 points in their group an average of 27.8 points per match.

On the defensive end they were decent with the third best defence in their group conceding a total of 112 points which averages out to 22.4 points per match. Galway returned to action in the Leinster Championship last-weekend beating Wexford comfortably by 6 points on a scoreline of 0-24 to 2-12.

Billy Drennan

The Right corner-forward was only playing U20 Hurling last year and played with them only two-weeks ago scoring a staggering 2-12 v Galway U20s. Despite this being his first year on the panel he looks to be the next superstar hurler to come out of Kilkenny after hitting a  2-70 total across his 7 league matches an average of 10.85 points per match.

It’s clear that Drennan is stamping his authority on the Kilkenny forward-line already! However it is unclear whether he will be fit for this tie as fears are growing that he could face a spell on the side-line following a suspected leg-injury. If he is available though it will be a huge boost for Kilkenny.
