Punters Turn Their Backs On Misfiring Mickelson

Fresh from playing on the same side in the USA’s failed Ryder Cup expedition, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are now preparing for a $9m face-off next month, but the latter has been abandoned by punters after his lacklustre display in Paris.

Dropped by captain Jim Furyk for the second day’s play, Mickelson failed to register any points for the Americans at Le Golf National and his singles defeat to Francesco Molinari officially secured the Ryder Cup for Europe.

The five-time major winner has always been the underdog for his anticipated head-to-head with Woods, billed as the showdown at Shadow Creek, but he is now out to 15/8 having been a shorter 11/10 when the book opened. Woods opened up an 8/11 shot, but was backed into 2/5 in the hours after the Ryder Cup concluded, despite some indifferent form of his own in Paris.

Woods was also defeated in all of his matches at the Ryder Cup but went into the event having won his first tournament in five years at the Tour Championship the previous week.

Neither Woods nor Mickelson delivered the goods in Paris, but if Phil brings the same form to Las Vegas he’ll get nowhere near the $9m pot.
