Aidan O’Brien & Anthony Van Dyck Heading For English/Irish Derby Double

On Saturday, the Curragh will stage the 154th running of the Irish Derby with the Ballydoyle master, Aidan O’Brien, heading the market with Epsom Derby champion Anthony Van Dyck.

The son of Galileo is 5/4 following the forfeit stage on Tuesday afternoon, with an exciting renewal against Madhmoon and Broome anticipated.

Madhmoon is 9/4 second favourite to give his trainer Kevin Prendergast his first Irish Derby victory. He was denied victory in the Epsom Derby finishing half a length behind Anthony Van Dyck with subsequent King Edward VII Stakes winner Japan, a nose back in third.

Broome finished fourth in the Epsom Derby behind his stable mates and he is 11/4 to give his trainer Aidan O’Brien his 13th success in the Group 1 classic.

His other four runners are Norway (33/1), Il Paradiso (33/1), Sovereign (50/1) and Western Australia (50/1).

Aidan’s son and former champion jockey Joseph O’Brien won this race twice as a jockey but added his first to the list as a trainer last year with Latrobe ridden by his brother Donnacha. This year Joseph sends out the Gallinule Stakes runner-up Buckhurst who is 16/1 from 20/1.
