Another Wachman Win In The Kilboy Estate Stakes?

A host of talented fillies and mares take each other on in the Group 2 Kilboy Estate Stakes over 1m1f at the Curragh on Sunday (3.45) – a race that has thrown up some juicy winners at 5/1, 7/1, 9/1, 12/1, 4/1, 5/1 and 7/1 in the last nine years.

One of the biggest clues to finding this year’s winner, however, comes via David Wachman, as he sent out three winners of the race in the last six years alone, and has Lahinch Classics entered on Sunday.

This 3yo won her maiden at Dundalk in April (1m3f), before an excellent second to Volume in Listed company at Newbury in May (1m2f, good).

The form of that performance also looks strong with Volume a subsequent third in the Epsom Oaks, suggesting Lahinch Classics has the class to go close at this Group 2 level.

Surprisingly, Aidan O’Brien has drawn a blank in this race since 2004, but has Peace Burg entered, who was a 3l third in a Group 1 last week (1m, soft), but hasn’t won for over a year. She is also unproven over 1m1f, suggesting Ballydoyle may miss out once more in this race.

One who is proven over this intermediate distance of 1m1f is Jospeh Murphy’s Euphrasia, who was a 1m2f Group 3 winner last October, before proving her wellbeing when just over 1l third in the Tattersalls Gold Cup here in May (1m3f, soft). There is a slight concern, though, that she may prefer more of a test.

Dermot Weld is another trainer not to have won this race in recent years, but is responsible for the highest rated runner in Along Came Casey. While this 6yo has a decent career record of 4-17, her last two wins came in Listed grade, compared to a record of 0-4 in Group 3’s.

The ‘in-form’ John Oxx did win this three years ago, and has Harasiya and My Titania entered. Of the pair, My Titania has the better recent form, having been beaten just over 2l by the classy Rizeena in a Group 1 at Royal Ascot (1m, good to firm), staying on in a manner which suggests she could improve over 1m1f.

English Raiders
Sir Michael Stoute made a winning raid here 12 months ago, and could land the pot once more with Mango Diva, who won a Group 3 over 1m1f (good) at Gowran Park last autumn. She warmed up for this with a staying on fifth (beaten 4l) in a Group 3 at Epsom last month (extended mile), and the extra yardage here will help.

Roger Varian has Princess Loulou entered, who has already run a good third in a Group 3 here at the Curragh over 1m in May (soft), before being outclassed in a Royal Ascot Group 2 on fast ground. The trip should be fine, but the key is the ground. Should any rain arrive, then she’ll be a definite player.

John Oxx is in sparkling form at present, which reads well for My Titania, but it’s hard to ignore the chances of Lahinch Classics, who represents David Wachman, who has such a good record in this race.
