Glorious Goodwood 2018 Day 3 Betting Tips – Niall Cronin

With a 125/1 winner at Goodwood yesterday and a 33/1 first reserve winning at Galway it has proven to be a tough week for punters and the Qatar Nassau Stakes might not make it any easier with many making cases for different horses at the top of the market.

With a bit of a cold hanging over the Ballydoyle team at the moment a cautious approach will have to be taken by Rhododendron who disappointed at Royal Ascot.

Rhododendron’s form did get a massive boost from Lightning Spear winning the Sussex Stakes yesterday but the admission of Aidan O’Brien that some of his horses aren’t quite right at the moment has to be a concern.

With that, Wild Illusion is the pick. The consistent filly has been second to Forever Together and Magic Wand on her last two outings and has another strong Ballydoyle representative to get the better of now but she looks best at this trip and she can handle any ground which is a help.

The conditions of the race see Wild Illusion get 8lbs from Rhododendron and that is a big swing and there is a chance that the three-year-old filly division is stronger than the colts this year…

so Wild Illusion shouldn’t be underestimated and looks a good bet at 9/2.

Johnston Has A Diamond On His Hands
Mark Johnston is never shy about running his two-year-olds and he has picked up some nice prize money with Marie’s Diamond so far this season, most notably at the Curragh last time when he won the Anglesey Stakes on Derby weekend.

Marie’s Diamond is pitched in again here for the Richmond Stakes and he looks a good value at 4/1 in this nine runner field.

After six runs in his career it looks like Marie’s Diamond is improving with each of them as his last two were his best and he was only narrowly defeated on his penultimate outing by Van Beethoven.

The quick turnaround shouldn’t be an issue for him and he’s hard to oppose in this Group 2.
