Hazapour Stakes Derby Claim For Weld

There was another Derby Trial shock today at Leopardstown as Hazapour came home ahead of Aidan O’Brien’s pair of Delano Roosevelt and 6/5 favourite The Pentagon.

Dermot Weld’s son of Sharmadal was slashed into 14/1 from 50/1 for the Derby off the back of the victory, while The Pentagon was pushed out to 14/1 from 12/1 after being beaten into third by his stablemate Delamo Roosevelt. Nelson, who led for most of the way, suffered an even more damaging drift in the market going out to 25/1 from 16/1.

Saxon Warrior is now a runaway favourite for the race after the weekend action, closing into 8/11 from Even money following defeats for favourites in Derby Trials at Lingfield and Leopardstown. Chester Vase winner Young Rascal remains his nearest challenger in the market at 11/1.

On that evidence you’d think Hazapour has what it takes to put it up to Saxon Warrior in The Derby

But defeats this weekend for a handful of dangers has seen Saxon Warrior backed off the boards and he’s now hot odds-on at 8/11 with Dermot Weld claiming he’s still the one to beat.
