And then there were two.

The reigning All-Ireland Hurling champions are Limerick who have created something of a dynasty given their recent sustained success at the very top level of hurling. Limerick have now won three Liam MacCarthy cups in a row – can they make it four straight in 2023?

Kilkenny are the most successful hurling county in Ireland with 36 All-Irelands but now find themselves in the midst of a 9-year drought without lifting the Liam MacCarthy. Can the Cats bite back this year and end the wait in 2023?

All-Ireland Hurling Odds 2023

Limerick – All-Ireland Favourites

Limerick are strong 4/11 favourites to win the All-Ireland Hurling Championship in 2023 ahead of this year’s final with Kilkenny.

This is the county that are dominating modern day hurling with their trademark style of short passing build-up and intense pressing on defence. The Treaty County have now won three-straight All-Irelands following their victory in 2022 which also made it four out of the last five for John Kiely’s men.

This Limerick team has to be considered a dynasty given their incredible run of success over the past five years. To add to their All-Ireland success this team has won two league titles and four straight Munster Championships in the previous five year period.

League Campaign

It was all looking good for Limerick after a strong spring which saw them win the National League.

In that competition the Treaty County finished second in the group stage of Division 1A. They had a record of 4 wins and 1 draw from their five matches played. It was nothing more than the consistency that we’ve come to expect from the Limerick hurlers.

They were the best team defensively between group 1A and 1B with only 99 points conceded throughout the course of those five games, an average of slightly less than 20 points conceded per game.

They then went on to beat Tipp by 6 points in the semi-final before they blitzed Kilkenny in the final to run out 11-point winners and secure yet more national honours.

Championship Campaign

The Munster Championship presented a bit more of a challenge for Limerick and they struggled to dominate the competition the way many had expected them to.

They struggled to a victory over Waterford in their opening game and then Clare were finally able to get one over on their neighbours as they pulled off a one point upset.

Tipperary were next up and Limerick were once again highly fancied but this time they were held to a draw.

Despite their poor showing in the early rounds of this year’s Munster Championship the Treaty County still managed to book a final spot thanks to a narrow one point win over Cork in the final round plus the help of Tipperary losing to bottom placed Waterford in their last group game.

A Munster Final against Clare followed. Limerick were able to get revenge that day by a solitary point. However, if it weren’t for a poor shooting performance from the Banner county the result could have easily swung the other way.

Analysis

It’s hard to back against Limerick. I personally don’t think there’s value in them at these odds but they are proven winners so it’s hard to say they are overvalued either.

Limerick have the better hurlers but you would be foolish to ever count Kilkenny out. Last year it was just two points separating these sides when they met in the All-Ireland final and I’d expect this year’s renewal to be just as tightly contested.

Kilkenny

Kilkenny are 21/10 underdogs to win the All-Ireland Hurling Championship in 2023 ahead of this year’s final against Limerick.

The Cats are actually the last team to knock Limerick out of the Championship and that result came all the way back in 2019. That was the only year of the last five that Limerick didn’t win the Liam MacCarthy and it was because Kilkenny beat them by the narrowest margin in that year’s All-Ireland SHC semi-final.

This is Kilkenny’s first season since 1998 that they will be managed by someone other than Brian Cody who resigned from his role as county manager last summer following a legendary spell which saw the Cats win 11 All-Irelands and 18 Leinster titles.

League Campaign

Kilkenny had a successful spring as they played their hurling in Division 1B where they won four out of their five games with only a solitary loss which saw them finish second.

They would play Cork in the semi-final in a game they won by 6 points. A date with Limerick followed in the National League final where the Cats were quickly brought back down to earth as the Treaty County outclassed them to run out 11-point winners.

Championship Campaign

Kilkenny bounced back from the disappointment of being thrashed in the league final to book a spot in the Leinster Final. Their round robin record in Leinster was 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss at the hands of Wexford.

The Cats of course went on to beat Galway with a late late goal which booked them a spot in this year’s All-Ireland semi-final.

Clare, like in last year’s semi-final, are the opposition that awaits them. We all remember the thrashing that the Cats inflicted on the Banner county last year in a game where Clare were heavily fancied in the leadup.

Could we be in for another repeat this time around?

Analysis

As mentioned earlier you can never count out Kilkenny as any follower of hurling knows. This is a county that lives and breeds hurling. When their players put on that famous black and yellow the always become greater than the sum of their parts.

These two teams met in last year’s All-Ireland Hurling Final so the Cats may have learned a few lessons from that experience that will serve them going into this year’s decider.
