Angel To Soar In Nunthorpe Stakes

Friday’s Nunthorpe Stakes favourite Limato begin the season over a mile at Newbury but now attempts one of the toughest challenges over five-furlongs and it’ll be interesting to see if he can follow up his July Cup win with another incredible victory for Henry Candy.

Angel Of York
I have to begin with the patriotic slant and a fiver each-way on Sole Power at 20/1 is a must. The old favourite is a previous winner of the race and isn’t getting any younger now at nine-years-old but he wasn’t disgraced when getting caught up in tacky ground at the Curragh last time and with a bit of luck in running you should get a good run for your money.

That said, it may be a bridge too far for Sole Power to win this race again but a bridge that is certainly one that Mecca’s Angel can conquer. The admirable filly herself bounced back to winning ways at the Curragh last month and although that was a drop in class compared to this, Mecca’s Angel certainly looked back to her best there and showed her versatility ground wise.

Limato is a top class horse but dropping down to five may just be the factor that catches him out and…

Clever Prospect
The Lonsdale Cup is a real tricky affair with cases being made for many of the runners and if the Knavesmire got rain it would leave the door open for Wicklow Brave to make a big claim but…

given a tentative selection at odds of 7/2 is Peter Niven’s Clever Cookie.

A winner at York earlier in the season over a couple of furlongs shorter, Clever Cookie just didn’t stay the extended trip on soft ground at Royal Ascot behind Order Of St George in the Gold Cup but he looks capable of giving this race a real rattle after a creditable effort here 12-months ago when he was fourth behind Max Dynamite.

Pallastor and Trip To Paris have obvious claims and even getting the latter back to this stage is an admirable achievement after the injuries he sustained but Clever Cookie is given the nod to oblige.
