McGregor Backed To Turn His Back On MMA After Poirier Defeat

A switch to boxing and another retirement for Conor McGregor are two of the prospects already being gambled after he was stunned by a second defeat to American Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in Las Vegas.

McGregor suffered a horrific leg break at the end of a frantic first round of the trilogy bout, sealing a second victory in a row for Poirier over the Dubliner, who insisted the rivalry was ‘not over’ as he lay on the canvas with his lower leg in a protective cast.

Poirier immediately claimed there was ‘no coming back from that,’ but a fourth fight between the pair before the end of the year is now priced at Evens, although we have also slashed the odds on a change of career direction for McGregor.

Bets are already being placed on a switch of codes and with a potential money-spinner against Manny Pacquiao potentially in the pipeline, it’s now just 10/1 from 16/1 that McGregor’s next fight is in the boxing ring.

The odds on the Irishman calling time on his UFC career by making another retirement announcement this year have also been slashed into 5/1 from 20/1.

A more dramatic career change by running as a TD in the next Irish general election is a remote 33/1 chance, although a trip to the jungle to take part in I’m A Celebrity Get Me Outta Here isn’t out of the question at a more likely 10/1.
