ON THE NEW GAFFER JOHN EUSTACE

“Up until last week I would always call him ‘Skip’ as he was my captain at Watford and he’s just one of those people you go to war with.

“He’s a good, solid man. I remember when we played he had two slipped discs in his back and still go through the game, we won it and he was having painkillers.

“You could see what he would go through to win the game and you’d be like ‘I’d go to war with that fella’ and he’s brought that here.

“It’s been impressive to see the revolution of the man because he was never a big talker but was a doer. If training standard weren’t high, he’d set it and get on to people.

“Now he knows how to speak, he’s well soft mannered in his approach but he’s got that father figure where he raises his voice and you fall back in line.

“This is a business and we have to make sure we deliver because we’re targeted by the results we bring in, and that’s what he’s trying to do now – bring a winning mentality.

“You don’t want to be the one doing a forfeit, whether it’s ten press-ups or standing on the line and everyone kicking a ball at you. The aim is to be a winner.”

SUMMER HOLIDAYS AND RECHARGING THE BATTERIES

“When last season was over, like most Blues fans probably, I couldn’t wait for it to be over.

“I did ten days with the kids, turned my phone off and went to Turkey and did an all-inclusive, having a real good go on some Turkish meats out there!

“I ate everything I wanted to and did nothing. I just went back to being a dad and enjoyed myself.

“Then I went to Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and worked out there with friends, then I did ten days in Mykonos and did pure football work, so by the time I came back for pre-season I was in half-decent nick.

“But I feel like the ten days with the missus and the kids was vitally important for me. I needed to reconnect with who I am.

“Football puts you in a bubble, this is all you worry about if you’re not playing – you need to do this or need to do that.

“I just turned my phone off and thought I’m pretty well off in life – I’ve got kids and my health – you know the basics we all take for granted. So after about eight-to-nine days, I was ready to get back work.”
