He said: “This is nearly an impossible one to call. I thought Cork would be on their summer holidays at this stage, but they have turned their season round completely with two big wins. Their win over Antrim has set them up nicely for this contest.

“Galway had a good Leinster campaign, but they were so poor in the final and you would imagine that we will see a reaction this Saturday against the Rebels. They players will be disappointed with how they performed so surely they will bring something to Thurles.

“You have Galway who will be trying to prove a point and Cork who have made plenty of changes under Kieran Kingston since the start of the year. It has the makings of a great game but who is going to win it is a hard one to call.

“I would rather be in Cork’s position coming into this as they will have plenty of confidence whereas Galway are unknown. If Cork get off to a good start, then that might knock Galway back.

“The difference between both sides is Galway are a big physical side. Cork are beginning to become like that but they are not quite at the same level as Galway. The only chance Cork have here is if they get off to a flying start.”
