Jose De Sousa Backed For Worlds After BoyleSports Grand Slam Win

Jose De Sousa became the first Portuguese player to win a major televised PDC title after landing the BoyleSports Grand Slam of Darts on Tuesday and is already seeing money for a run at the World Championship next month.

We chalked De Sousa up at 18/1 at the start of the tournament in Coventry but he took the scalps of Dave Chisnall, Michael Smith and Simon Whitlock in the knockout stages before taking out 158 to get over the line with a 16-12 win over James Wade in the final.

De Sousa is now a 12/1 shot from 25/1 to add a World title to his CV on New Year’s Day.

Meanwhile, Wade’s run to the final has seen him close into 22/1 from 40/1 to win the World Championship as he seeks to become only the third man to bag ten major titles.

Speaking to BoyleSports’ Sarah Kinsella after he picked up the trophy, De Sousa said: “It’s the first time I’ve qualified for this and to win with so many great players, it’s so hard. But I did it and it’s amazing. Many people may be surprised with my game but in the last couple of months I’ve been playing so well and it’s a result of hard work.”
