Dublin v Louth Preview

Dublin’s Form

Dublin has bounced back following their relegation from Division 1 last season by winning six of their seven league matches to earn promotion straight back to Division 1 for the 2024 season and earning a place in the Division 2 Final in the process.

They went on to obliterate a fancied Derry side in the second half of that league final to make amends for the earlier defeat to the Oak Leaf county.

They dispatched Louth, Cork, Kildare, Meath, Clare and Limerick along the way during their league campaign with arguably their most impressive success coming in Round 6 with their 2-19 to  2-11 win away to Meath.

Throughout Division 2 Dublin were the second-highest scorer with 125 points scoring an average of 17.85 points per match, only Cork has scored more with 137. Dublin also had the second-best defence in the competition with only 95 points conceded which is 13.57 points per match, Derry had the best defence with 69 points conceded.

Dublin commenced their Leinster Championship Campaign where they demolished Laois in a 2-09 to 4-30 scoreline in the Quarter-Final in typical Dublin fashion. However, they overcame a scare last time out when they could only beat Kildare in a 0-12 to 0-14 score in the Semi-Final which suggests Dublin are not fully back to their best just yet.

Louth’s Form

Louth entered the 2023 League Campaign in Division 2 following their promotion from Division 3 last season where they won the League section of the competition along with the League Final. Louth had a decent campaign in Division 2 coming in third place behind Derry and Dublin but notably ahead of Cork after winning four and losing three of their seven matches.

While Louth had only the fifth-best attack in the Division with 102 points scored an average of 14.57 points per match where they really shone was on the defensive end. Mickey Harte’s men conceded 99 points, an average of 14.14 points per game, this was the Division’s fourth-best defence but was only 1 point worse than Kildare’s total of 98 and only four less than Dublin’s total of 95 points conceded.

Louth commenced their Leinster Campaign by defeating Westmeath in a closely fought 1-11 to 2-10 score before another battle with Offaly who they eventually overcame with the help of extra time. Louth’s last Leinster Championship Title came back in 1957 although they were controversially denied a Leinster title in 2010 thanks to a late Joe Sheridan goal that shouldn’t have counted.

Key Players To Watch

Ciaran Downey

The Louth Centre-Forward was their top-scoring player in their victory over Offaly with a total of 0-7 in the game and most impressively all of his scores came from play.

If Louth wants to shock Dublin at the weekend the Newtown Blues man is going to need to be on his top form for them to get close to a result.

Con O’Callaghan

Among the most talented footballers in the country, and a capable hurler to go with that, the Football Team are very lucky to have Con in their panel who has scored a staggering 18-91 since joining the group in 2016.

His goal-scoring threat is in a league of its own and if he can get his name among the goals this Sunday Dublin will be half way to another Leinster victory.

Dublin v Louth Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Dublin 1-15 Louth 0-13

Dublin comes into this match as heavy favourites despite their scare against Kildare two weeks ago. In their Quarter-Final they demolished Laois in a 2-09 to 4-30 score which was their first game since their League-Final victory over Derry when a flurry of second-half goals gave them the Division 2 title over Derry in a 0-11 to 4-6 scoreline.

Dublin will be looking for more goals again Sunday.

Louth have improved immensely under Mickey Harte and their defence was one of the meanest in Division 2, they have also shown they’re capable of pulling off shock victories notably beating a well-fancied Cork side in the league.

That being said, Dublin is a different beast and I’d expect them to have too much for this up-and-coming Louth side. But it should be closer than people expect as Kildare have shown Dublin are far from perfect.

Best Bet: Winning Margin Dublin 4-6 @ 15/4
