Group E Preview – Euro 2024 Qualifiers

Poland

On the 24th of January former Euro 2016 winning manager Fernando Santos took over as Poland’s Coach. He had only been dismissed by Portugal the previous December following their 1-0 loss to Morocco in the World Cup quarter-finals.

Santos had overseen the country since 2014. Poland’s best appearance at the Euros was in 2016 when they reached the quarter-finals. Ironically they were beaten at this stage by Santos and Portugal on penalties who would then go on to win the competition. At the 2020 Euros they were knocked out at the group stages following a disappointing campaign.

Poland boasts a dearth of world-renowned talent and despite their advancing years, Szczęsny (32), Zieliński (28) and their talisman Robert Lewandowski (34), will all remain key to this nation’s chances for Euro 2024. The Polish are rated at odds of 50/1 to win Euro 2024.

Czech Republic

Jaroslav Šilhavý has been in charge of the country since 2018. The highlight of his job so far came at Euro 2020 where he led the team to a quarter-final position. In 2022 the Czechs struggled with six defeats, two draws and two wins.

It must be noted that they were placed in Nations League Group A and so the quality of the teams they faced would’ve been much higher than the quality they would expect to meet in this group.

Bayer Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick will be key for his side’s chances of rivalling Poland at the top, he boasts an impressive record of 18 goals in 35 games for his country, and Czech captain midfielder Tomáš Souček will be a familiar face to followers of the Premier League given his exploits at West Ham.

You can back the Czech Republic at odds of 66/1 to be crowned champions of Europe next summer.

Albania

On 2 January 2023, The Albanian Football Association announced former Brazilian International Sylvinho as their new head coach with the goal of qualification for Euro 2024.

Is that a realistic goal? The country has only qualified for one previous tournament which was in 2016 where they got knocked out at the group stages. Slyvinho in previous roles with the likes of Lyon and Corinthians has shown himself to be a tactically flexible manager who will set up his team on a game-by-game basis.

Some promising talents are coming through the Albanian youth systems with the likes of Armando Broja (21) at Chelsea, Kristjan Asllani (21) at Inter Milan and Marash Kumbulla (23) at Roma. Despite, some exciting talents coming from Albania they are still a long way from competing for major honours which is reflected by their 500/1 odds for Euro 2024.

Faroe Islands

People may remember that Irish Football legend Brian Kerr was in charge of the nation from 2009-2011. Swedish man Håkan Ericson has been in charge of the country since December 2019 and in 30 Games he has managed them to 8 wins, 8 draws and 14 defeats, a win ratio of 26.67%. However, to their credit they have avoided defeat in 54% of their matches.

Their squad largely consists of home-based or Finish-based players. With that being said, midfielder Stefan Radosavljevic will be a familiar face to fans of Irish Football following his move to Sligo Rovers last month following a record of 44 Goals and 20 Assists in 145 appearances in the Faroes top flight.

Moldova

Serghei Cleșcenco has been in charge of the side since 2021 after progressing through the Moldovan coaching ranks with the U21s and as a senior assistant manager before being given the role.

Cleșcenco boasts a win ratio of 50% from 10 matches with 5 wins, 1 draw and only 4 defeats which is the second-highest win ratio for the country ever and the highest of managers who have overseen the national squad for more than 6 games.

Moldova also only narrowly missed promotion from their Nations League group on goal difference to Latvia. While they might be far from a footballing giant, Moldovan Football does seem to be on the up under the tutelage of Serghei Clescenco.
