Group J Preview – Euro 2024 Qualifiers

Portugal

There is a new man in charge in Portugal, Roberto Martinez was announced as the successor of Fernando Santos in January. Martinez had previously managed Belgium from 2016-2022 managing a win rate of 70% and guiding the country to a third-place finish at the 2018 World Cup.

Portugal has consistently placed in the later stages of the European Championships with their most notable achievement coming when they won Euro 2016. At the 2022 World Cup they had an impressive tournament up to their 6-1 thrashing of Switzerland in the Round of 16 but unfortunately were knocked out 1-0 to buoyant Morocco at the quarter-final stage.

Martinez will have a nice blend of youth and experience to work with at Portugal with full-back Nuno Mendes (20) and Gonçalo Ramos (21) already starring at club and international levels. Martinez has decried “I don’t look at age” as he named Pepe (40) and a certain Cristiano Ronaldo (38) in his first Portuguese squad.

Bosnia and Herzegovina

Faruk Hadžibegić was appointed in January for his second stint in the role the first which came all back in 1999. He is coming into a squad in decent form, they had four wins, two draws and two defeats in 2022.

They will be looking to qualify for their first-ever European Championship with their only appearance at a major tournament coming in the 2014 World Cup where they were eliminated at the group stages.

The main man for Bosnia will be the veteran striker Edin Džeko who despite recently turning 37 still seems to be productive as ever with eleven goals and five assists in thirty-eight games for Inter Milan in 22/23. His record for Bosnia is a staggering sixty-four goals in one-hundred and twenty-six games.

Iceland

Arnar Viðarsson has been in charge of his nation since 2020 following a spell as U21 manager from 2019-2020. In his twenty-nine matches in charge, he has overseen five wins, a staggering thirteen draws and eleven defeats which is a win ratio of 17.24%.

Everyone remembers their heroics in first of all qualifying for their first European Championship in Euro 16 before going on to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament including their knocking out of England with a 2-1 victory in the round-of-16. They would make their first-ever World Cup in 2018 being eliminated at the group stages.

Iceland is another side where there some of their parts are bigger than the individuals involved but the likes of Burnley’s Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson a familiar face to followers of English Football.

Luxembourg

Luc Holtz has been overseen the side since 2010 making him one of the longer-serving managers in international football following his two years in charge of the U21s from 2008-2010. In his 119 games in charge, he has overseen twenty-six wins, twenty-three draws and seventy defeats.

Luxembourg will be looking to qualify for their first-ever international tournament. Key to those chances could be Yvandro Borges Sanches (18). The Luxembourgian Supertalent has already made 16 appearances for his country at Senior Level and has also made his club debut for Borussia Mönchengladbach. He has the potential to become his country’s greatest-ever player.

Slovakia

Francesco Calzona has been in charge since last August and since taking charge has managed his side to three draws and one defeat. Most impressively last time out for Slovakia he guided them to a 0-0 draw vs South American Giants Chile.

Slovakia has qualified for the European Championships on two occasions reaching the round of 16 in 2016 and being eliminated at the group stages in 2020. They will be looking to qualify for their third successive European Championship.

The side can boost an impressive array of talent including Milan Škriniar (28) of Inter Milan, Stanislav Lobotka (28) of Napoli and up-and-coming Groningen attacker Tomáš Suslov (20). Slovakia will fancy their chances of qualification.

Liechtenstein

Rene Pauritsch was first appointed manager of Liechtenstein in 2012, succeeding Hans-Peter Zaugg. In 2018 he left his role as manager to become the sporting director of the national team. This month he has taken over as caretaker manager after Martin Stocklasa left Liechtenstein for the manager role at FC Vaduz.

Liechtenstein is currently ranked 198th in the world and has lost all their nine games in 2022 conceding twenty goals and only scoring one goal. It’s hard to see them even scoring a goal in this group not to mind getting a point! Young forward Philipp Gaßner (19) might be their player to watch.
