Recent England performances

“It’s been a long season for many of the England players. I put a lot of the defeat to Hungary and performance down to fatigue.

“I know Gareth Southgate said it had nothing to do with it and I know it’s difficult when you finish the season and are looking for a rest, but these games are coming thick and fast.”

“You go out looking for a breather, but you’re not going to turn down playing for your country.

“We’ve seen Gareth change the squad on many occasions now, picking the players that are on form and that’s the way he’s looked at it but I saw the body language of a lot of the players and it looked like they were playing on memory.

“I know what it’s like to keep playing and playing, it does catch up with you. Certain games you look fresh but a lot of that squad need a good month off to recharge their batteries.”

Nations League tournament

“The Nations League was a good idea to put the better sides together rather than playing the likes of San Marino and Gibraltar; no disrespect to them but they’re not worth playing.

“I understand the idea of the Nations League, but they didn’t need it at the end of the season.”

“I think the Nations League should be scrapped. The Nations League was great two or three years ago, but there’s too much football now. We know it’s for financial reasons, but it’s a complete waste of time.”

Tournament qualification

“I’m also not a fan of the qualifying because you know it’s going to be just a matter of how many England score.”

“There has to be a better way of qualifying for the Euros – they should put the smaller teams together and let that decide who joins the big boys in the group. It’s pointless.

“If England draw San Marino home and away in a group you know England will win, it’ll just be about helping increase the goal difference.”
