It’s surprising this clash isn’t listed among others as one of the biggest rivalries in European, if not world football. It’s heated of course and local pride is at stake, but it comes at a time where both clubs are having fantastic seasons.

Sevilla go into the game as slight favourites at 6/5 but Betis have been defying the odds this campaign, with former Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini firmly at the wheel.

The home team go into the clash on the back of a 1-0 defeat in the Europa League at Dinamo Zagreb on Thursday, but progressed to the last 16 only just on aggregate 3-2. While Betis also advanced with the same aggregate scoreline over Zenit, playing out a goalless draw in the second leg.

Surely, they’re both saving their better performances for Sunday’s clash. What makes the derby even more appealing is that the hosts are unbeaten at home in the league this season (their only loss in all comps was in the Champions League to Lille at the start of November).

And Betis go into the game unbeaten in their last seven away matches in all comps, scoring a whopping 21 times. They’re 13/5 to win, or 6/1 to win and both teams to score.

Anthony Martial has settled reasonably well into life for the hosts from Manchester United, scoring in the Europa League last week, but is yet to find the net in La Liga. Currently touch and go at the time of writing with a thigh problem, but what a time to open his account if he does make it. He’s 6/1 to score first or 9/4 anytime.

This season’s top goalscorer Rafa Mir is also in attacking contention for Sevilla and is 9/2 First Goalscorer.

Who remembers former Spanish international Joaquin? Yes, he’s STILL playing at the grand age of 40 – turning 41 this summer – which is incredible. And he hasn’t been a bit-part player either, clocking up the minutes in La Liga and the Europa League. I still remember him at Euro 2004.

For a team in second place, Sevilla have scored just 37 times this season. However, they are much better at home than they are away in that respect with 26 strikes. They did though have away day success at Betis with a 0-2 victory in November.

Sixteen goals at home have been from open play while seven have been from set-pieces, so you could consider centre-back Diego Carlos at an anytime goalscorer price of 15/2. Juan Kounde is serving a suspension, unfortunately.

But despite their efforts at the right end, they’ve been excellent shutting them out at the other and have the best defensive record with 17 goals conceded from 25 La Liga matches.

Thirty of their goals this season have come from open play, with just eight coming from set-plays. Both sides also met recently in the Copa del Rey just a month ago, with Betis winning 2-1 thanks to Canales and Fekir.

This makes for not only a mouth-watering local derby in general, but an intriguing match-up. Sevilla’s robust defence, or Betis’ free-scoring antics to come out on top?

With Barcelona looking to close the gap on third on Sunday night at home to Bilbao, and still with a game in hand, Betis know what they have to do and could spring a surprise – and what a place to do it at – denting Sevilla’s hopes of catching Real Madrid on top.
