Shamrock Rovers

Shamrock Rovers v St Pat’s Betting Tips | President’s Cup Odds | Friday 11th February

SSE Airtricity League champions Shamrock Rovers welcome FAI Cup holders St Pat’s for an 8pm kick-off on Friday night as the 2022 President’s Cup Final lifts the curtain on the new season under the lights at Tallaght Stadium.

The traditional teaser for the new campaign has taken place since 2014 and Shamrock Rovers are 4/5 favourites in the match betting to get their hands on the trophy for the first time.

They missed out last year in a penalty shootout to Dundalk, while the pandemic put pay to the 2020 match which would have featured the same two sides.

St Pat’s meanwhile are seeking their second victory after winning the inaugural match against Sligo Rovers in 2014 as Premier Division champions; until now the only other contest in the event’s short history not to feature Dundalk.

Instead it’s two Dublin rivals going face-to-face on Friday and it promises to be an intriguing match-up between two sides who have bolstered their squads in the off season having finished first and second in last year’s race for the title.

Rovers boosted their ranks with the addition of Andy Lyons from arch-rivals Bohemians last month, adding to the highly anticipated return of Jack Byrne to the squad.

It may have required an injury time own goal, but The Hoops won the most recent meeting between the sides to make it three wins in a row against their city rivals, while you have to go back to 2018 to find the last time St Pat’s came out on top.

If the odds-on quote about another Shamrock Rovers win is too short, 21/10 is available on the league champions to win to nil, although a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes is the most popular selection in the correct score betting at 11/2.

Shamrock Rovers are also being backed to defend their League of Ireland Premier Division title after betting was opened ahead of kick-off next week.

The reigning champions no longer face the prospect of opening their new campaign against UCD behind closed doors after a ban was overturned, so fans will descend on Tallaght next Friday to watch the Hoops start their bid to be crowned champions for the third consecutive season as clear favourites.

A successful title defence has been chalked up in the betting at an odds-on 4/6, while Friday’s opponents St. Pat’s are 11/2 third favourites.

Derry City, meanwhile, are being singled out as the biggest dangers to Shamrock Rovers in the outright betting for the Premier Division.

The Candystripes have ex-players back in the fold with Michael Duffy and Patrick McEleney both returning to their hometown club from Dundalk and Ruaidhri Higgins’ side are set to kick-off the new season as second favourites in the betting having been clipped into 9/2 from 5/1 to land their first Premier Division title since 1997.
