All-Time Premier League Bottle Jobs

Liverpool face Leicester on Wednesday night with a chance to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to 7 points over Man City.

It would be a commanding lead at the top and while it might seem impossible for them not to win the league from that position, there have been teams in Premier League history who have blown similar leads.

Newcastle held a massive 12 point lead in January of 1996 and what followed was one of the most spectacular title run-ins/ bottle jobs of all time.

Not only did the title run in feature a top of the table clash between the two sides in which Newcastle BATTERED Utd only for Peter Schmeichel and Eric Cantona to concoct a 1-0 win for the Red Devils.

Not only did the title run in feature arguably the greatest game in Premier League history, when Liverpool beat Newcastle 4-3 at Anfield.

This title run in also gave us one of the all-time great mental breakdowns captured on television. Newcastle were still fighting for their title but it wasn’t enough and Manchester United were crowned Champions.

Only a couple of years after the implosion of the Toon Army, Man Utd suffered their own collapse from a seemingly impossible position.

With 9 games to go and an 11 point lead over Arsenal (admittedly Arsenal had games in hand) United suffered back to back defeats against Sheffield Wednesday and then in the top of the table clash with the Gunners.

Marc Overmars scored the only goal and mocked Eric Cantona’s legendary celebration from the year before. United dropped more points against old rivals Liverpool and Newcastle and Arsenal went from strength to strength to claim Arsene Wenger’s first Premier League title.

Tiny wee Marc Overmars standing, chest puffed out, on the Old Trafford turf as Arsenal wrestled the title away from Utd. The Arsenal fan in the Old Trafford crowd completely losing the run of himself.

All those moments were eclipsed in 2014. Steven Gerrard’s slip against Chelsea has become one of the most iconic, talked about, joked about and sung about moments in Premier League history.

One slip from one of Liverpool’s greatest players let Demba Ba in to put Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in front and coupled with a spectacular collapse against Crystal Palace a few days later allowed Man City to steal the title away from Merseyside.
