Shane Dowling has insisted Galway and Kilkenny should be considered serious All-Ireland contenders ahead of this weekend’s Leinster Final at Croke Park.
Munster sides Limerick, Clare and Cork are all ahead of the Leinster finalists in the betting for the Liam MacCarthy Cup, but Dowling is refusing to rule out one of them going all the way to All-Ireland glory later this year.
👀 "I don’t think Galway and Kilkenny are as far away from the Munster sides as many are suggesting!"

“I don’t think Galway and Kilkenny are as far away from the Munster sides as many are suggesting,” Dowling told BoyleSports.
“We’ll have a fairer reflection after the final, but there’s no reason why either side can’t go full at it and showcase their credentials. If either were to play Limerick or Clare in All-Ireland quarter-final, would it be a foregone conclusion? Absolutely not. They may be slightly behind, but you couldn’t go into a game against Galway or Kilkenny over-confident.
“Galway have some of the top forwards in the country. They are deadly and they only need half a chance, and they will get half a chance with the space in Croke Park. With Kilkenny dropping off and at times mixing between going short and going long, there may be pockets of space.
“Conor Cooney has transformed himself this year, he’s running really hard at defences. Cathal Mannion is one of the sexiest hurlers in the country, and I don’t mean by appearance! He’s a really classy hurler, his style is top notch and he’s got wrists as good as anyone in the country. If he gets half a chance, he’s a deadly finisher.
“It’ll be entertaining for us outsiders to see if Brain Cody and Henry Shefflin shake hands, but I’m sure they’ll not worry about it too much themselves. Henry is getting a good bounce out of Galway. They were close to a Leinster title a couple of years ago, but I think that hunger and desire will get them there this time.”
"I'd be all over that price!" 👀

Shane Dowling believes All-Ireland favourites Limerick could pay a heavy price if they try to mark Tony Kelly out of the game in this weekend’s Munster Final at Thurles.
Kelly was responsible for 16 of Clare’s 24 points in a thrilling draw with the Treaty earlier this month and Dowling accepted he will require greater marshalling if Limerick are to prevail in the provincial decider.
“It’s a real conundrum for Limerick what to do with Tony Kelly,” Dowling told BoyleSports.
“He had an incredible game the last day and was scoring from everywhere, he gave an exhibition. But I actually wouldn’t be putting a man-marker on him. Some may say that’s mad, but if Limerick man-mark him and he roams all over the park, they will leave space and they’ll have people coming into space they’re not used to.”
“I do think they’ll have to have more focus on him, but I don’t expect to see one person picking him up.”
Dowling also predicted a much closer game than many have predicted, claiming Brian Lohan’s side are being underestimated.
“No matter which way you wash it up, Clare finished top of the round robin,” he added. “I know they were both at Cusack Park, but they’ve drawn twice with Limerick and Clare aren’t getting the credit they deserve.
“To get that credit they’re probably going to have to go and win a Munster Final. People are starting to take notice, but they do need to put in a performance and I think they can give Limerick a very close game.”
“Aaron Gillane didn’t play the last day and he probably will this time, so that brings a different dimension to the Limerick full forward line, they will try to use him as a trump card. But I don’t think it’ll be as simple as the betting suggests with Limerick as the 1/5 odds-on favourites.”
