Connolly has admitted Dublin still have it all to do to be crowned All-Ireland champions again despite winning a 12th consecutive Leinster title.
Dublin’s dominance in the province was cemented in ruthless fashion by a 5-17 to 1-15 thrashing of Kildare, but Connolly has warned the resurgent Dubs that Kerry are still a step ahead in the race for Sam Maguire.
“Dublin are really starting to hit form again, Connolly told BoyleSports. “We know how much they struggled in the league and it was a really poor campaign, but I was impressed by their inside forward line against Kildare. Cormac Costello and Con O’Callaghan were immense and just remarkable on the day. But in reality, they won’t learn much from their Leinster campaign.”
“Derry are the form team in Ulster and we know how competitive Ulster teams can be. They won’t meet Dublin or Kerry until a final. Donegal, Monaghan or Mayo may also have a sting in the tail.”
“But Kerry are clearly out in front at the minute for me. They are a scoring machine. They are really mean at the back too, they have a solid midfield, and there is a cavalry to come off the bench.”

Connolly believes Mayo have a much more difficult task to navigate the All-Ireland qualifiers this year after their defeat to subsequent Connacht champions Galway.
The six-time All-Ireland winner was speaking ahead of Mayo’s clash with Monaghan in Castlebar on Saturday and he believes it will be far from straightforward for the hosts.
“James Horan has given so much to this Mayo squad,” Connolly told BoyleSports.
“He’s constantly knocking at the door in the All-Ireland series and most of the Mayo squad are young and ambitious. They tend to bounce back every year, no matter what setbacks they come up against.
“But they capitulated in the league final against Kerry and then Galway picked them off in Connacht – that’s two heavy defeats and I wonder about their mental stability after that. Now I’m hearing rumours of injuries in the camp.
“Mayo are red hot favourites, but I fancy Monaghan to give them a game. I like the way Monaghan went through the league and they just didn’t get firing in the second half of the Ulster semi-final against Derry.
“If Monaghan get the ball in early and Mayo don’t get their defence set, a player like Jack McCarron could have a field day.”

Diarmuid Connolly is a six time GAA All-Ireland Football winner with Dublin. During his illustrious career he also won two All-Star awards. He retired from inter-county football in October 2020.
The 6′ 1″ forward still plays for club team, St Vincent’s, with whom he won five Dublin Senior Football Championship titles.
Connolly also won ten Leinster Senior Football Championships with St. Vincent’s as well as four National Football League titles.
He also joined the Dublin hurling panel as a dual player where he won an U21 Leinster medal.
