The Course
The Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas has been hosting PGA Tour events since the old king died. It’s a 7,209 yard par 70 with only two Par 5s and it’s always a classic test of precision over power. Hit it straight and putt well and you’ll do well at Colonial.

The weather is fascinating. It’s due to get progressively warmer and windier every day and by Sunday we’re due to get consistent 22mph winds.

The Favourites
For Justin Thomas (9/1) it’s after the Lord Mayor’s show. The USPGA win was a massive moment for him and I don’t see how he applies himself for 72 holes this week. I have a slight preference for Scottie Scheffler (also 9/1), although last week we saw some coolness disappear as he was the most angry of his three-ball – he could even have damaged his driver by smashing it against his bag. I don’t know if the weight of expectation of being world number 1 is getting to him, but I think we need to leave him in peace for a while.

Top Tip
Jordan Spieth is at 10/1 with 11 places at BoyleSports and he can break par at Colonial in his sleep. He feels so at home on this terrain, he knows every blade of grass and experience counts for so much here as none of the last 20 events at Colonial have been won by a PGA Tour maiden.

You’ve got to serve your apprenticeship and learn how to score here. Spieth was 7th on debut here in 2013 when he was still a teenager. His results since then read 14, 2, 1, 2, 32, 8, 10 and 2. Nobody in the field this week has better Colonial credentials than Jordan Spieth. This is dreamland for him and if there’s one thing holding him back lately it’s that he’s not holing his share of putts. But he loves these greens.

His ball striking has been great, he won the Heritage with an ice-cold putter and he was 2nd in the Byron Nelson without holing a putt on the Sunday.

As an extra layer of motivation, he is up to world number 9 and at one stage last year he was close to dropping out of the top 100. He’ll be thrilled to be threatening number 1 status again.

Next Best
The only serious danger for me is Collin Morikawa (12/1). He should revel in this test of accuracy, he’s so well suited to the course that he always bucked a trend by winning on debut here when he lost to Daniel Berger in a play-off. He was also 14th last year.

Last week at the USPGA he was on the wrong side of the draw and there was so much anger in his group of Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm. He was 2nd in the Genesis Invitational, 5th in The Masters and he knows it’s time to step up a gear. This is a great opportunity to do so.
