Pestana The New Favourite For BoyleSports Greyhound Derby

The Owen McKenna trained Pestana was the talk of Shelbourne Park over the weekend as the BoyleSports Champion Stakes winner clocked the fastest time of the opening round for the 2020 BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby.

Pestana made all from a tough draw wearing the orange jacket in five but showed his brilliant early pace into the first turn to record a blistering 29.21 winning by a length to Razldazl Peaky on Friday night. Pestana was cut into the new 10/1 favourite following his performance but has since been trimmed further into 8/1 after the draw was made on Saturday night with this flying machine getting that all-important trap one in the second round.

Another top-class performance from Friday night was the Pat Buckley trained Glengar Bale who skipped round Shelbourne Park in 29.40 to win by 4½ lengths and really caught the eye. His strong pace has seen his odds nibbled into 14/1 from 16/1 and is one of many future stars in Buckley’s impressive kennel as his Deerjet Sydney was another winner in 29.39. This son of Droopys Sydney – Madgies Wish was fast away from the boxes and is now 20/1 from 33/1.

Last year’s Derby champion Lenson Bocko grabbed 3rd spot in the race won by Deerjet Sydney with his odds eased out to 12/1 from 10/1 favourite. Newinn Taylor, who was beaten for the first time in his career by Toolmaker Sydney, remains 12/1 while Toolmaker Sydney is 16/1 from 20/1.

Coolavanny Chick caught the eye when winning the first race on Saturday night with her odds crumbling into 33/1 from 50/1. This flying machine dominated the home straight after picking up the leader Newinn Lester to clock a very fast 29.39 coming from behind for owner Noel Hehir. That was just her 8th career start and she is certainly one to keep an eye on for the future.

Newinn Sheedy was another big ante post mover following his 29.47 victory to land heat 19. Trained by Graham Holland who had a successful weekend with numerous qualifiers, Sheedy has tumbled into 33/1 from 66/1 with Knocknaboul Syd a length and half back in second with his odds also trimmed into 33/1 from 50/1.

What a fantastic weekend of racing at Shelbourne Park for the opening round of the BoyleSports Irish Greyhound Derby. Pestana was the fastest heat winner in 29.21 which has earned him a new spot in the betting as this Owen McKenna star is now the new 8/1 favourite from 12/1. Lenson Bocko has been eased out to 12/1 from 10/1. Coolavanny Chick was very impressive and is now 33/1 from 50/1.

The draw for the second round has been completed and we are looking forward to another weekend of top-class action.
