Robbie Power has two rides booked on Grand National day and the winning jockey on board 2007 winner Silver Birch has cast his eye over Saturday’s big races with BoyleSports, including his own chances in the big one at 5.15.

2.25 Novices’ Hurdle

It looks a good opportunity for Three Stripe Life to get his head in front. He’s been running well all season, he won his maiden hurdle at Fairyhouse and has been second now in three Grade 1s.

So his form is very solid, but I have a soft spot for COLONEL MUSTARD as well. He’s a very good horse and the step up in trip will definitely suit him. He had a cracking run last time when third in the County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. He has loads of experience and I think he has a big chance.

3.00 Novices’ Chase

Edwardstone was mightily impressive in The Arkle but he faces a very stiff test here in GENTLEMAN DE MEE for Willie Mullins. He missed the Cheltenham Festival and was very impressive when winning a graded race at Navan last month. He’s a strong frontrunner and I think he’ll give Edwardstone plenty to think about.

This flat track will probably suit Third Time Lucki, but he needs to be held on to and Harry Skelton will need to ride him with patience.

3.35 Liverpool Hurdle

They won’t want to let Flooring Porter dictate like he did at Cheltenham, but there’s not a whole pile going to take him on for the lead either.

They might challenge a little earlier, but I don’t think Thyme Hill is going to take him on, and Champ definitely isn’t.

If FLOORING PORTER is able to dictate again, he’ll be very hard to beat.

5.15 Grand National

I think last year’s winner Minella Times will find it very difficult this year with the big weight on his back. Delta Work was back on form with a cracking win in the Cross Country Chase at Cheltenham. That race is often key for the Grand National and that’s good form.

My own ride Poker Party has a lot to find on form this season, but he is a Kerry National winner, stamina shouldn’t be an issue and the ground would have been against him in the Cheltenham Cross Country on his last start. With decent ground at Aintree, he may have a decent each-way chance.

Discorama has been trained with this race in mind, he was 6th last year and he had a decent run the last day at Fairyhouse when 2nd over 3m. He’s going in a bit fresher this year and Paul Nolan knows how to get one right for the big day. For someone looking an each-way bet, I think he’s overpriced.

Escaria Ten ran a cracking race in the Bobbyjo Chase when just touched off by Any Second Now, who was unlucky in running last year.

If Fiddlerontheroof got his jumping together he could be a big, big danger. I’d have thought stamina wouldn’t be an issue, but he didn’t jump very well at Ascot the last day and if he doesn’t get into a good rhythm, it’ll be difficult. For that reason, I’m going to side with ESCARIA TEN.
