Cheltenham Festival 2022 Day One Betting Tips | Robbie Power

Jockey and BoyleSports racing ambassador Robbie Power reflects on the Dublin Racing Festival & discusses his betting tips for Day One of the Cheltenham Festival in March.

The Gold Cup and Grand National winning jockey spoke with Leon Blanche this week at Fairyhouse, firstly discussing all the fallout from the Dublin Racing Festival last weekend, aswell as his best race winning tips & each-way value for Day One of the Cheltenham Festival.

Supreme Novices’ Hurdle

Robbie Power believes Sir Gerhard will be sent to the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival instead of the Supreme after his victory at the Dublin Racing Festival.

He said that he thinks the Willie Mullins star will step up in trip and leave the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle to Dysart Dynamo and Kilcruit. He also fancies Riviere D’etel to reverse the form with Blue Lord in the Arkle Chase and shared his thoughts on the Champion Hurdle on the opening day of the Festival.

He said: “Sir Gerhard was impressive when winning the Grade One Novice Hurdle at the Dublin Racing Festival, there is no doubt about it.

“There is no doubting his engine, but there are question marks over his jumping as it left a little bit to be desired. I know Paul Townend felt that if he had a bit of company, he would have jumped a bit better.

“He will need to jump an awful lot better if he is to win a Supreme Novices’ Hurdle as he won’t get away with making those mistakes.

“It was a hell of a performance at Leopardstown and if both Sir Gerhard and Dysart Dynamo get there fit and well, I would think the former is the most likely to step up to the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle. Keep Dysart Dynamo in the Supreme and probably Kilcruit will take him on in the Supreme.

Arkle Chase

He said: “Blue Lord deserves to be favourite, but I thought Riviere D’etel was very unlucky not to win that race at Leopardstown. If she landed running on the back of the last then she would have won.

“She was closing on Blue Lord again going to the line and I think the extra emphasis on stamina in the Arkle will play to her strengths.

“It’s going to be interesting to see how Edwardstone gets on. He runs at Warwick and is without doubt the leading contender of the British challengers.

“I think Third Time Lucki who we saw at Doncaster last week is each-way value. I think he might run at Warwick again this week. He is interesting and definitely each-way value if he is ridden with a bit of restraint.

“Riviere D’etel will be getting seven pounds off Blue Lord and I think she can reverse the form with him. She stays two miles really strongly and I’d be keen to lay Blue Lord at the Festival.

Champion Hurdle

He said: “Honeysuckle is unbelievable, and the funny thing is I don’t think she was at her best at the Dublin Racing Festival. She travelled through the race nicely and she quickened off the bend, but she just didn’t hit the line as strong as she normally does.

“I think there is more to come from her which is frightening, she is that good.

“The reception she got on Sunday at Leopardstown was amazing. It’s so good to have that back again at racecourses. It would remind you of the days of Danoli and Florida Pearl coming back into that winners’ enclosure getting that almighty reception.

LATEST ODDS ON THE CHAMPION HURDLE ARE HERE

“It will be interesting to see Appreciate It go in fresh, but Honeysuckle will be very hard to beat in the Champion Hurdle.

“The value in the race could be Teahupoo or Quilixios. They are juveniles from last season who will run well this season and 16/1 represents each-way value on them both.”
