Gatsby To Throw Down Money For Tattersalls Gold Cup

All eyes will be on the Curragh this Sunday when the famous racecourse stages two superb Group 1 events – the first of which is the Tattersalls Gold Cup at 3.20, where the Brits will be looking to make a third consecutive win in the race.

Gatsby Returns To Ireland

There is every chance of another successful raid on Irish shores too, as Kevin Ryan sends over The Grey Gatsby (5/4), a 4yo colt who has an excellent record over this 1m2f trip, having produced form-figures of 1121. He also warmed up for this with a 4l second in a Group 1 in Dubai in March, running on well over 1m1f.

The return to his preferred longer trip of 1m2f will suit, and the fact he is officially the highest rated runner in the race off 126 has been an advantage in this race down the years.

Standing in The Grey Gatsby’s way is the 2013 winner of this race, Al Kazeem (9/4), who is 6lb inferior to the favourite, but brings bags of experience to the table. Roger Charlton’s 7yo also lines-up bang in form, having been beaten under 2l by the mighty, Cirrus Des Aigles, in France earlier this month (1m2f, soft), and he will no doubt be bang there once again.

Leading Fancies’ Chance Postponed?

Not that Sunday’s Gold Cup is by any means a two-horse race, as Luca Cumani’s 4yo, Postponed (10/3), looks capable of trumping the first two in the market.

This smart colt climbed the ladder last term, winning a Listed event over 1m3f, before a Group 2 success at York up at 1m4f. Although he failed to make a winning return in a Sandown Group 3 last month (1m2f, good), he showed plenty of speed and should come on for that outing – that was the third time he failed to win first time out.

Rock Looks Fascinating

Punters looking for an each-way steal may choose to stick to the domestic runners, where Dermot Weld’s, Fascinating Rock, a lively 10/1 chance. Convincingly beaten in both Derby’s last term, he has bounced back to win a couple of Listed/Group 3 races this spring (including over this C&D this month), and will let the others know they have been in a race.
