Harzand All Set To Deliver Derby Double

Fresh from racking up his 4000th winner on Wednesday evening, Dermot Weld can win his third Irish Derby at the Curragh this weekend.

It’s been a week full of different rumours about which horses would or wouldn’t face the starter and while it is disappointing not to have US Army Ranger, the best price 10/11 with BoyleSports about Harzand will make up for the loss of that head-to-head.

Idaho is a good colt who ran a blinder at Epsom and may have been a shade unlucky on his two runs before that, but Harzand is a top class colt who has a massive constitution to be able to overcome the drama of Derby morning at Epsom and produce a performance to win in the manner he did.

…the Curragh as a track should suit Harzand better than Epsom and heavy rainfall in Kildare on Friday afternoon certainly won’t have done him any harm at all.

Red Verdon has been supplemented and will need to be in the first three places to recoup that €100,000 fee for his connections but after a luckless passage at Epsom he can be expected to run a big race and the 10/1 best priced available about Ed Dunlop’s colt will make appeal to each-way players.

Harzand is the standard setter though, he is the Epsom hero who will provide Dermot Weld with his first Derby double.
