Robbie Power Says Supasundae Can ‘Eat Up’ Paisley Park At Cheltenham

Cheltenham 2019

Stayers Hurdle

Robbie Power thinks Supasundae can go one better than last year by winning the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham.

The former Gold Cup winning jockey is due to ride the 7/1 shot and with last year’s winner Penhill ruled out, Power has questioned the credentials of long-time antepost favourite Paisley Park.

Speaking at the our Chelenham preview night, Power said: “Supasundae’s a Galileo, he loves good ground so he’d love it if it came up good on the Thursday. It helps him to get the three miles up the hill.”

“It is perfect tip-wise for him and he would’ve been a good winner last year because he was five or six lengths clear of the third horse.”

“The English are ranting and raving about Paisley Park yet picking holes in the form of Apple’s Jade. But he’s only beaten West Approach who I’ve ridden for Colin Tizzard and it’s a very, very ordinary horse.”

“Barry Geraghty rode in the race that Paisley Park won at Cheltenham in January and he came in and said that Penhill and Supasundae will eat him up. I’d rather back Apple’s Jade next week who’s beaten Supasundae twice than Paisley Park who’s beaten West Approach twice.”

Power did however sound a note of caution on Apple’s Jade, who is the current joint 15/8 favourite alongside Buveur d’Air for the Champion Hurdle:

“My only concern is that all her best performances came on flatter tracks like Aintree, Fairyhouse and Leopardstown; they don’t have the undulations of Cheltenham.”

She may have won the Mares’ Hurdle but she didn’t produce her best that year. She’s inclined to jump out to the right too and all the times you do that, they build up. You can’t afford to do that and still win a Champion Hurdle. I just don’t think Cheltenham is her track.”
