Easter Monday at Fairyhouse will mark the 150th running of the race, with BoyleSports offering a prize fund totalling €500,000, the largest on the Irish National Hunt calendar.

Stattler was installed at the head of the antepost betting at 9/1

…having landed the National Hunt Chase on the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival as trainer Willie Mullins seeks his second win in the race following Burrows Saint’s victory in 2019.

The Gordon Elliott-trained Farouk D’alene, who was runner-up to Stattler in a Novice Chase at Naas in January and fell in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham, is joint second favourite at 12/1 alongside Max Flamingo, who booked his ticket by winning a Beginners’ Chase at Thurles last Saturday for trainer Francis Casey.

Among the entries is last year’s winner Freewheelin Dylan, who has been chalked up at 25/1 for a stunning repeat after landing the first prize as the longest priced winner in the history of the race at 150/1.

Andrew Shaw, the IHRB’s Senior National Hunt Handicapper, said: “This year’s entry for the BoyleSports Irish Grand National is one of the strongest in recent times, with as many as 15 Grade 1 winners amongst the 93 entries.

“There is huge strength in depth to the race with the top 25 horses rated 150 or higher. Much of the credit must go to BoyleSports whose increased sponsorship has raised the profile of the race to a much higher level over the past five years.

“One of the more popular winners would be Max Flamingo, trained by local man Francis Casey. He was an impressive winner in Thurles last weekend, has a nice racing weight, and appears to have been trained specifically with this race in mind.

The BoyleSports Irish Grand National is a National Hunt steeplechase in Ireland which is open to horses aged five years or older. It’s run at Fairyhouse over a distance of about 3 miles and 5 furlongs, and during its running there are twenty-four fences to be jumped. It’s a handicap race, and it’s scheduled to take place each year on Easter Monday.

The event was established in 1870, and the inaugural running was won by a horse called Sir Robert Peel. This year is the 150th running of BoyleSports Irish Grand National.
