Who Will Represent Ireland in Eurovision 2023?

The band Wild Youth will represent Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Liverpool, England.

The band is from Dublin and the four performers who make up the band are Callum McAdam, Conor O’Donohoe, Ed Porter and David Whelan. They have made a name for themselves on the Irish and UK music scene having toured with the likes of Lewis Capaldi and Westlife.

Wild Youth will be the first band to represent Ireland at the Eurovision in 40 years. In order to earn their spot as Ireland’s Eurovision representatives they had to beat out tough competition at the Eurosong special on the Late Late Show from five other contestants.

The most notable of the contestants that they topped was John Lydon, the former frontman for the Sex Pistols.

What Is Ireland’s Eurovision Song?

The name of Ireland’s song for Eurovision 2023 is We Are One which will be performed by Wild Youth. Swedish grammy-nominated songwriter Jorgen Elofsson helped the band compose the song.

Elofsson co-wrote the hit single “Stronger” sung by Kelly Clarkson. That song received nominations for Song of the Year and Record of the Year at the 2013 Grammy Awards.

Eurovision Betting Favourites In 2023

Ukraine

Ukraine is the betting favourite to win Eurovision 2023 at 6/4 odds with the song “Heart of Steel” performed by TVORCHI. The implied probability of those odds suggest Ukraine has a 40% chance of winning this year’s Eurovision. These short odds make Ukraine far and away the favourites with their closest competition in the betting odds being all the way back at 6/1.

Ukraine are the defending champions having won the Eurovision last year with the song “Stefania” performed by Kalush Orchestra. The country received 439 points in televoting in the final which was the most ever received by a country. A lot of people believe that Ukraine’s success in Eurovision 2022 is related to the invasion by Russia and other European countries wanting to show support to the country in the song contest.

Sweden

The second favourite in the betting odds for Eurovision 2023 is Sweden at odds of 6/1. We still don’t know who will represent Sweden at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

Sweden will select their entry for this year’s Eurovision at Melodifestivalen on the 11th of March. The Swedish are the second most successful country in Eurovision history with six wins with the most famous of those being “Waterloo” sung by ABBA. They have also consistently been a top performer in recent years as they have qualified for the final of the song contest 17 out of 18 times since 2004.

Norway

The third favourite in the betting for this year’s Eurovision is Norway at 8/1 odds. Norway will be represented by Alessandra with the song “Queen of Kings” at this year’s song contest.

The Norwegians have won the Eurovision three times with the most recent of those victories coming in 2009 courtesy of Alexander Rybak’s hit song “Fairytale”. This is another Scandinavian country with a strong recent track record in the competition with six top 10 finishes over the past 10 years.

How Many Times Did Ireland Win The Eurovision?

Ireland has won the Eurovision a record 7 times. The country first competed in the Eurovision in 1965 and it didn’t take long before we had an Irish winner with Dana’s “All Kinds of Everything” in 1970.

It would be another decade before Ireland were victorious again courtesy of Johnny Logan’s performance of “What’s Another Year” in 1980. It was Logan again who would go on to win his second Eurovision for Ireland in 1987 with “Hold Me Now”.

Then came the 1990s, the Golden Age of Irish success at the Eurovision Song Contest. Ireland won the competition four out of five years between 1992 and 1996. In 1992 it was Linda Martin with “Why Me?”, 1993 saw Niamh Kavanagh’s “In Your Eyes” come out victorious and Paul Harrington and Charlie McGettigan performed the iconic “Rock ‘n’ Roll Kids” for three-in-a-row.

The song “The Voice” sung by Eimear Quinn in 1996 was Ireland’s fourth song contest win of the decade and seventh in total. Unfortunately for Ireland since then it has been disappointment at the Eurovision Song Contest with no wins and plenty of times where the country has failed to qualify for the final.

Which Semi-Final Are Ireland Competing In At Eurovision 2023?

Ireland are competing in semi-final 1 in Eurovision 2023. The first semi-final takes place on the 9th of May with the second semi-final on the 11th of May and the Eurovision final on the 13th of May.
