League of Ireland First Division Table

Here’s how the League of Ireland First Division table looks after the first five weeks of action.

Treaty United v Waterford

When? 7.45 pm, Friday, March 24th

Where? Market’s Field, Garryown Rd, Limerick

How To Watch? LOITV.ie

MATCH BETTING ODDS

Treaty United are 9/2 to win this match while Waterford are 8/15 favourites. The draw is priced at 3/1.

Preview

An out-of-sorts Treaty United entertain an inconsistent Waterford in the Market’s Field in this Friday’s Munster Derby

Treaty looked to have put their poor early season form behind them when an Enda Curran brace put them 2-0 up with goals in the 50th and 69th minute, Athlone s misery was compounded further in-between with them being reduced to ten men on the 55th minute when Jamar Campion-Hinds was sent off for a high-foot and second yellow card.

However, a Late Late show from Athlone with goals from Isaie Louis in the 83rd minute and Van Geenan incredibly in the 99th minute meant the points were shared.

Treaty also narrowly lost out in a Munster Senior Cup vs Cobh Ramblers on Tuesday night in a 3-2 thriller at home to Cobh. A sign things might be coming together after they had already lost 2-0 to them earlier in the season.

Waterford started the season as many people’s runaway favourites for the league but with only 8 points from their first five games, it’s shown that it will take more than investment from Fleetwood to get them promoted to the Premier Division.

A 2-1 defeat from Premier side Cork City in the Munster Senior Cup on Tuesday was also a good run-out for their fringe players.

Prediction

Waterford are sure to click into gear sooner rather than later and with Treaty still mentally fragile as shown by their collapse in Athlone. I’m going with a 3-0 win for Waterford

Galway United v Longford Town

When? 7.45 pm, Friday, March 24th

Where? Eamonn Deacy Park, Dyke Rd, Galway

How To Watch? LOITV.ie

MATCH BETTING ODDS

Galway United are strong favourites at 2/9 to win this match while Longford are 10/1 outsiders. The draw is priced at 4/1.

Preview

Faultless Galway hosts a Longford side which has yet to get going this season on Friday night in Eamonn Deacy Park.

Galway has been nothing short of imperious in their opening five matches in the First Division this season with a perfect five wins from five matches. They have scored a staggering 15 goals in that time 7 more than the next-best side along with only conceding two which is good enough to be the best in the division.

BoyleSports have installed them as 5/4 favourites to win the First Division. Key to their success this season has been their American Central Midfielder Vincent Borden who has 4 Goals and 1 Assist in his first five games this season.

Longford comes into this match with only 3 points from their opening five matches with three draws and two defeats Stephen Henderson’s side will be looking to pull off a shock victory and win their first game of the season. However, he has shown to have the ability to get teams promoted from the First Division before with the likes of Cobh Ramblers and Waterford so expect him to be given time to impose himself on the side.

One name to keep an eye out for on Friday night and for the rest of the season from a Longford standpoint is former Ireland U18 International Josh Giurgi (20) who is a quick and skilful player capable of playing anywhere along the right-hand side of the pitch and will be pivotal to any play-off charge Longford make this season.

Prediction

Galway are in imperious form, and I’d expect that to continue. Longford for all their poor form do not concede many goals so do not expect an annihilation. Galway to win 2-0

Finn Harps v Cobh Ramblers

When? 8.00 pm, Friday, March 24th

Where? Finn Park, Ballybofey, Co. Donegal

How To Watch? LOITV.ie

MATCH BETTING ODDS

Finn Harps are favourites at 5/4 to win this match, Cobh are priced at 2/1 for victory while the draw can be gotten at 9/4.

Preview

A steady Finn Harps side hosts an in-form Cobh Ramblers on Friday night in Finn Park in what looks to be a very even contest.

Despite coming into this match on the back of a defeat at home vs Galway last Friday night that was their first defeat of the season having won their first four games on the bounce. If Cobh continues in their vein of form, they will be well in the play-off mix at the end of the season their 10 points in their first 5 games is only 7 points less than what they got in their entirety of last season. On Tuesday night Cobh put their defeat to Galway behind them by beating Treaty in the Munster Senior Cup semi-final 3-2 as they look to retain their trophy from last season.

Following relegation from the Premier Division last season and with Dave Rogers new to the job there was always going be a period of transition up in Ballybofey. However, they were able to get their first win of the season last Friday night in Longford when an 81st-minute Ryan Rainey penalty was enough to get them the 3 points. That win meant that Dave Roger’s army are averaging exactly one point per game this season.

Prediction

Cobh are in good form but it’s a long trip for them to be making, Finn Harps are ultra-consistent so I can see this being a 1-1 draw and I think both teams would take that!

Bray Wanderers v Wexford

When? 7.45 pm, Friday, March 24th

Where? Carlisle Grounds, Bray, Co. Wicklow

How To Watch? LOITV.ie

MATCH BETTING ODDS

Bray Wanderers are 21/20 to win this match, Wexford are 23/10 while the draw is 9/4.

Preview

It’s been a better 2023 on and off the field for Bray and they will look to build on their 9-point total as they host Wexford in the Carlisle Grounds.

Bray comes into this fixture as the only other unbeaten side after league leaders Galway in the First Division this season with two wins and three draws scoring 7 goals and only conceding 4. Last time out they pulled off an impressive performance away to Waterford, after being 2-0 behind inside 22 minutes from a Ronan Coughlan brace, they would score in the 45th minute through Ben Feeney and the 75th minute from Max Murphy to grab a big point on the road.

Wexford comes into this game in great form, putting their opening two match-day defeats behind them to earn 7 points in their last 3 games with a 3-0 win over Athlone, 0-0 draw with Finn Harps and a 2-1-win vs Kerry FC last Friday. They have a goal difference of +0 after scoring and conceding 6 goals this season.

Prediction

I cannot see these teams being separated on Friday with both in good form except for a 1-1 draw.

Kerry FC v Athlone

When? 7.45 pm, Friday, March 24th

Where? Mounthawk Park, Tralee, Co. Kerry

How To Watch? LOITV.ie

MATCH BETTING ODDS

Kerry are 15/4 to win this match, Athlone are 6/10 favourites while the draw is 14/5

Preview

Mounthawk Park and Kerry FC play host to Athlone in another first-time-ever match in their maiden League of Ireland Season.

It’s not been easy picking for Kerry FC in their maiden season with four defeats in their first five-game their only point coming in their 1-1 draw with Treaty. However, aside from a 9-1 humbling from Galway United, they have remained competitive in the rest of their fixtures only losing 2-1 to Wexford last Friday. Leo Gaxha since coming back to Kerry from Sheffield United has been in great form with 2 Goals and 1 Assist in his first 5 Games.

Athlone comes into this in poor form also, despite having 8 points from their first 5 games in their last three they have two defeats with their only point coming from their Late Late show performance v a struggling Treaty United. They also give teams a chance as they have scored and conceded eight goals this season.

Prediction

I’m going rogue with this one, Leo Gaxha is in great form since returning from England and I think he will score in a 2-1 win for The Kingdom their first-ever League of Ireland win!
