Conservative Leader Twist As Liz Truss Replacement Gets Shock Backing

There has been a significant move up the betting to be the next leader of the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom to replace Liz Truss.

Prime Minister Liz Truss insisted on Monday she will lead the party into the next election, but faces a huge fight for her political future after new chancellor Jeremy Hunt dismantled most of her tax-cutting plans in a bid to stabilise the markets.

A snap YouGov poll on Tuesday also suggested a majority of Conservative members wanted Truss to resign and she has now sunk into an odds-on 4/9 from 3/1 with BoyleSports to be replaced by the end of the year.

Theresa May was one of the names forwarded as possible unity candidate this week and the former PM has been slashed into 14/1 from 40/1 for a return to Number 10, while Penny Mordaunt is now second favourite at 4/1 from 13/2 after fielding questions on the economic crisis on the PM’s behalf on Monday in the House of Commons.

Rishi Sunak, the man Truss beat in the final round of the leadership contest last month, remains the favourite to be the next Tory leader at 7/4.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “Liz Truss fights on for now, but the money is piling in on a new leader and Penny Mordaunt is certainly trending in the right direction this week.

Theresa May has also attracted some significant stakes at big prices and she’s made an interesting move into 14/1 from 40/1, so we’re keeping an eye on that one as the mumblings about a coup go on.”
