The Form – Man City v Tottenham

Man City’s Form

Man City come into this game off the back of a stinging 2-1 defeat to local rivals Manchester United. Truth be told, City don’t look like the dominant force that they once were in the Premier League and anything other than a win here might put the title out of reach.

The recent EFL cup loss to Southampton is another indicator that this Man City team are out of sorts at the moment.

Tottenham’s Form

Last time out Tottenham were beaten by Arsenal 2-0 in the north London derby. That scoreline does Spurs a bit of injustice though as they played well in that game with more shots, shots on target and possession than Arsenal.

Since the 2-0 loss to Aston Villa on New Year’s Day Conte’s men have upped their performance levels with a 4-0 thrashing of Crystal Palace and a 1-0 win against Portsmouth in the FA Cup.

How The Two Teams Match Up – Man City v Tottenham Prediction

Man City’s Attack

Earlier in the season it seemed difficult to imagine how anyone could stop this Man City attack with the addition of Erling Haaland into the mix. Now, they are struggling to create chances and even more so to convert the chances they do create.

Evidence of this is that Pep Guardiola’s men have not scored more than one goal in any of their last three Premier League games. Despite 71% possession in the Manchester derby City could only register one shot on target.

When you look at the attacking lineup it is still one of the best in the world but the recent scoring form doesn’t back that up.

Tottenham’s Defence

Over the course of the season Tottenham have been poor defensively for a top six team. They are tied for the 8th most goals conceded in the Premier League to date. This is even worse when you consider that manager Antonio Conte is lauded for his defensive system.

Playing away to Man City we can expect Spurs to retreat into a more defensive set up than usual and they will likely be playing most of the game in defence against a Man City side that like to boss possession.

Tottenham’s Attack

When we talk about the Tottenham attack one player stands out above the rest. That is of course Harry Kane. The England striker has been as consistent in front of goal as ever with 15 goals to his name this season which puts him behind only Haaland in the top goalscorer standings.

Kane isn’t the only top player that Tottenham have available to them up front. Son Heung-min is an ever present threat going forward with the ball at his feet. However, Son has not been playing his best football in recent games which will be a concern for Tottenham going into this game. Forward Richarlison has also not been able to replicate his World Cup form at club level just yet.

Man City’s Defence

Man City’s defence hasn’t really been the issue in their recent run of poor form. Even in the games they have lost they haven’t been conceding loads of chances. If you were to criticise anything it would be perhaps a little bit of carelessness at times when passing the ball around at the back that has led to some great chances for opponents.

In terms of goals conceded this is the third best defence in the Premier League with 18 conceded so far this season. Manuel Akanji has been impressive in the centre of defence and we could see him joined for this game by Laporte. This defensive pairing will need to be at their best as they face off against Kane and Spurs.

Man City v Tottenham Prediction & Best Bet

Prediction: Man City 3-1 Tottenham

This is a massive game for Man City if they want to keep their title hopes alive. If they can’t get the three points here then they will have it all to do to catch Arsenal at the top of the table. I think we will see City’s best performance of the new year here which will be too much for Tottenham to cope with.

Best Bet: Man City To Win Both Halves at 2/1 NOW 9/4

Man City v Tottenham Prediction – Goalscorer Betting Odds

In the goalscorer betting market I think Julian Alvarez getting his name on the scoresheet first at odds of 4/1 represents the best value for bettors. The young Argentina star was instrumental in leading his country to World Cup glory as a constant goal scoring threat.
