Mickelson To Go Far In Wells Fargo

Established in 2003, the Wells Fargo Championship is one of the most popular tournaments on the PGA Tour, considered by some to be the sixth Major.

The Tournament
Nine of the eleven winners have come from the United States, with Rory McIlroy the sole European to taste success. As usual the field is of the highest quality for a fiercely competitive event that has gone to a play-off six times in its history.

The Course
The final three holes at the Quail Hollow Club are known as the ‘Green Mile’ and considered to be one of the toughest finishes on the PGA Tour. At around 7,500 yards, the course is long, but the narrow fairways also give little room for error, so accuracy off the tee is just as important as distance.

After problems at the eighth and tenth holes in 2013, the bentgrass putting surfaces were replaced with Bermuda grass, and the layout was tweaked, but the course remains a stern test.

In The Bunker
Rory McIlroy is in the field, so the antepost betting has taken on a familiar look with the world number one in at a short price and everyone else trailing at a distance.

Of course, he has the ability to turn this into a procession, but are you prepared to back him at 10/3?

Many punters will say yes, but I don’t see much future in lumping on at that kind of price so once again I’ll be avoiding Rory this week.

It’s been a tough season so far for Phil Mickelson, but he showed that he’s still capable of the highest quality golf when finishing second at the Masters and I’m backing him to finally win a tournament at which he has an impressively consistent record.

In twelve visits to Quail Hollow, he’s managed seven top-ten finishes and with a record like that, we can overlook his indifferent form. Back him at 25/1.

After making his PGA Tour breakthrough last summer, Hideki Matsuyama’s career has been on the up and he has shown no sign of losing form in 2015. He followed up a career best fifth at the Masters with a top ten at the WGC World Matchplay and fought back from a disappointing second round at the Players Championship to finish in the top twenty.

He’s playing without fear at the moment and still has plenty of potential. Back him at 25/1 to pick up his second Tour title.

The final name to add to your shortlist is Adam Scott. He’s had a disappointing season so far, and let himself down with a poor final round at the Players Championship last time out, but he’s a long accurate driver and his game is well-suited to Quail Hollow where he has managed two top tens in six visits. Back him to rediscover his form at 33/1.
