Newinn Going For Glory

The Premier Cup takes pride of place this weekend in the North Tipperary Town of Templetouhy.

Templetouhy coursing club deserve a lot of credit for the effort they have put into their new facilities, they ran a top class meeting last season the viewing for spectators is as good as any coursing field you will go to and I look forward to attending again this weekend coming.

It’s make or break for a number of runners in this thirty two dog affair, the points on offer here are like gold dust!

A win here for Crafty Who(4/1) could cement his place in the champion stake’s, he is a very speedy performer on his day and could run with the best of them in the early rounds of any all age.

He was very impressive in his win in Gorey and came up against the mighty Vale View Flyer in the final in Borris In Ossory, getting beat by that dog is noting to be ashamed of!

He meets Downtown James(10/1) in his opening buckle, this fellow was a winner in Knockgraffon and won’t give in too easy to Crafty. Skellig Sunlight(3/1) is on six points at the moment after his win in Cashel and his runner up spot in Johnstown. Reports from South Clare say he was unlucky in the semi-final so if that outing didn’t take too much out of this Dennis O Driscoll trained runner, he could go a long way in this competition.

All of last season I was a big fan of Newinn Glory(5/2), he picked up a nasty toe injury when he won his trial stake in Ardpatrick and connections had a race against time to get him right for the national meeting. He made a very impressive return to action this season in Newcastlewest where he reached the final and came off second best to Needham Work, who in many people’s eyes is a leading Champion Stakes fancy. That was a great pipe opener for Newinn and that will have left him spot on for this weekend, he is coming from the in-form kennels of Michael J O’Donovan and the one and only Mickey Reidy.

Going through the draw I think it has been kind to him and should come out of the bottom half. Other runners hunting for points in this field are Skellig Blues(6/1), Cooga Mafi(12/1) and Power of Peace(6/1). I fancy New Inn Glory to continue Michael Donavan’s domination of the coursing season. If Glory was to win here he could be a leading player in the Irish Cup at the end of February.

In the All Aged Bitch stake here Fire Height Una(2/1) is the stand out lady for me, she did everything asked of her in North Kilkenny which confirmed her early season form in Glin. She meets the Skippy Gilbert trained Primeley Sceptre(4/1) in the first round who is going for her third win of the season and the long field in here will suit her.

Garry’s Secret(3/1) has form over course and distance, she is the current title holder here and won’t let go too easy, she is sitting in the top half of the draw and could make the final. There is a bitch at the bottom of the draw who could run well at a very fancy price, That’s My Tail(6/1), she is an unlucky bitch and there is defiantly a big run in her. Overall, Fire Height Una should prove too good here.

In Millstreet, the North Cork Cup is the main attraction and again like in Templetouhy there are dogs hungry for points so a win here is vital for a number of these runners. Both Avenue Ranger(3/1) and Lochbo Charlie(3/1) have two wins under their belts so a win or a runner up spot should seal the deal for these two. It will be far from a forgone conclusion for these two to reach the final because with dogs like Roquefort Barney(2/1), Alleyesonus(6/1), In The Centre(4/1) and Knockrour Nash(6/1) breathing down their necks it will not be an easy task. Lochbo Charlie hasn’t put a foot (or a paw!) wrong all season and I can see him taking the cup back to West Cork for his owners and trainers, the Spillanes from Bantry.

There were a number of impressive winners over the festive season, I was in Mooncoin myself and was impressed by the Oaks trial stake winner Kingstone Jessie who gave the King family their first trial stake winner. She had been beaten in two finals before she finally booked her lodge car park pass in Mooncoin, she could prove very hard to handle in the early rounds of the oaks and will do her connections proud in February she has been priced up at 20/1 for classic glory.

The Derby trial stake winner Chubbys Charmer won first time of asking and should improve from this outing for trainer Graham Holland and was put in at 20/1 but that was hoovered up straight away and is now only 16/1 for the Boylesports.com derby. In Borrisoleigh Michael o Donovan further enhanced his team for Clonmel as he picked up yet another trial stake with Two Steps Closer, this bitch ran well in Castleisland where she was beat by kennel companion Boshski, she will love the stretch in Clonmel and gained many followers with her display here. She is available at 16/1 for the oaks.

In Wexford there was a very popular win for the derby sponsor John Boyle when his dog Ashmore Phantom won the derby trial stake after showing glimpses of talent earlier in the season, he finally put things together and is a 20/1 chance for the sponsors own money! Fingers crossed that Needham Danger can make it a great Christmas for the boss man with a win in Abbeyfeale!
