Candidates To Be The Next Southampton Manager

Jesse Marsch

Recently sacked Leeds manager Jesse Marsch is the runaway favourite to take over from Nathan Jones at Southampton at this stage in the betting. Our odds makers now have Marsch down to 2/9 to become Southampton’s next permanent manager.

Reports suggest that the decision makers at the club are giving Marsch’s name serious consideration to be Nathan Jones’ replacement. The American coach had a tough time of it in Elland Road this season with the club only securing four wins in the Premier League which has put them in a relegation battle.

Marsch is a well respected coach in European football so although things didn’t work out towards the end of his run at Leeds a change of scenery could make sense for him here and work out for Southampton. Steven Gerrard

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has had a tough go of it in his Premier League management career but he is rated as the second favourite to become the next Southampton manager at 8/1 odds. Gerrard started his senior managerial career up in Scotland at Rangers where he had a lot of success.

At Ibrox he led Rangers to a Scottish Premiership title in 2021 in an unbeaten season which was the club’s first league title in Scotland for 10 years. His success up north landed him the Aston Villa job in the Premier League where Gerrard struggled.

Villa ultimately sacked Gerrard less than a year into his contract at Villa Park following only two wins in the first 12 league games. Maybe Southampton feel like it’s worth taking a shot on the former Villa manager in the hope that he has learned from his mistakes during his last spell as a manager.

Mauricio Pochettino

Pochettino has been a popular name with each passing manager vacancy in the Premier League. The Argentine first made a name for himself in English management during his time at Southampton which makes a return to St. Mary’s an interesting storyline to keep track of.

If you fancy Pochettino to make a return to his former club in an attempt to save them from the drop then you can find odds of 10/1. Southampton would be landing a massive coup if they can persuade their former coach to return given that the last team he took charge of was French giants PSG.

Ralph Hasenhuttl

In a similar vein to Pochettino, this is another former Southampton manager being linked with a return to the club. Hasenhuttl is rated as the joint third favourite in the betting for the Southampton job at odds of 10/1.

The Austrian was in charge at St. Mary’s from 2018-2022 before he was sacked earlier this Premier League season with the club having only picked up 12 points from 14 games.

In the short time that he has been gone the club have struggled even more and now sit bottom of the table. Maybe after some time apart Southampton’s board think that the grass isn’t greener without Hasenhuttl and look to him to guide this team from relegation.

Marcelo Gallardo

At fourth favourite in the race to be the next Southampton manager is Marcelo Gallardo. The Argentine was most recently managing River Plate who are one of the biggest clubs in South America.

The 46-year-old left the Argentinian giant in December when his contract ran out after a legendary spell at the club which saw him guide them to fourteen trophies. Gallardo has previously been linked to Man United and FC Barcelona so it looks like he might want to try his luck at managing in one of Europe’s top leagues.

If Southampton can convince him to come to St Mary’s, then it would be a massive boost in their bid for Premier League survival this season. Marcelo Gallardo is 14/1 to become the next permanent Southampton manager.

Scott Parker

The ex-Bournemouth manager is one of the names being linked to the vacancy at Southampton. Parker also managed Fulham in the Premier League during the 2020-21 season which ended up in the London side being relegated.

Earlier in this Premier League season Parker was in charge of Bournemouth when they suffered a 9-0 loss to Liverpool. He was sacked shortly after that result. Parker has had success, but this has all come at the Championship level where he guided both Bournemouth and Fulham to promotion.

The 42-year-old is still young by managerial standards so maybe he deserves another shot to prove that he can cut it as a manager at the Premier League level. Scott Parker is 33/1 to be the next permanent Southampton manager.

Kjetil Knutsen

The Norwegian national is currently in charge of FK Bodo/Glimt who are one of the top teams in Norway. Knutsen is highly regarded by many as a manager that plays attractive attacking football while also developing young talent.

The 54-year-old has recently been linked with English clubs Burnley and Brighton. It appears that there is some interest on the part of the Norwegian in coming to manage in England so maybe he sees Southampton as the perfect opportunity do to just that.

Signing Knutsen as manager would be a bit of a gamble by Southampton as he is coming from a league which is a much lower standard. However, he has had success with his club in European competition. You can back Knutsen to be the next Southampton manager at 33/1.
