Betting Says Javid Is May’s Most Likely Successor

Sajid Javid is the most likely candidate to replace Theresa May as leader of the Conservative Party after bets flooded in following a week of political turmoil in London.

May’s future as Tory leader has been thrown into the doubt by a series of letters of no confidence sent by her own MPs. If 48 Tory MPs send the letters, a ballot will be triggered on her leadership of the party.

Punters are evidently bullish that May’s job will soon be on the line after a burst in money behind some of the candidates lining up to replace her. BoyleSports had to cut the odds on Saturday on Home Secretary Sajid Javid taking the top job in to 5/1 from 6/1, making him the new favourite to be Conservative Party leader.

Boris Johnson remains a key player in the market and is second favourite at 6/1, while Michael Gove’s odds have shrunk into 7/1 from 10/1. He reportedly passed up the role of Brexit Secretary after seeking reassurance that he would be given licence to renegotiate with the EU.

Gove is joined as joint third favourite at 7/1 by former Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab.

The amount of money we’ve seen in the next Tory leader market this week suggests that…

punters are smelling blood and they’re clearly expecting a leadership election to be triggered any time.

As for potential successors, Sajid Javid and Michael Gove have seen the bulk of support but Boris Johnson remains firmly in the mix too as second favourite.
