Mary Lou McDonald

Fianna Fáil/Sinn Féin Rated Most Likely Outcome

A Fianna Fáil/Sinn Féin coalition is still rated as the most likely government ahead of negotiations in the wake of Saturday’s general election.

The make-up of the new government was clouded in uncertainty after the exit polls indicated a three-way tie in first preference votes between Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Sinn Féin.

As tallies began to trickle through on Sunday, BoyleSports made a Fianna Fáil/Sinn Féin coalition the 3/1 favourite, while 4/1 was being offered on Fianna Fáil forming a government with Fine Gael. A Fianna Fáil coalition with Independents, Labour and the Green Party is the third most likely option in the betting at 8/1.

Micheál Martin drifted from 1/14 to 1/4 to be the Taoiseach, with Mary Lou McDonald shortening into 6/1 from her odds of 11/1 when the polling stations opened on Saturday morning. Leo Varadkar also closed into 5/1 From 10/1 after the exit poll hinted at a stronger than expected showing from Fine Gael.

We were expecting uncertainty and we were none the wiser after the exit polls indicated that three parties were so evenly matched in first preference votes.

A Fianna Fáil/Sinn Féin coalition is marginally still the most popular bet for the make-up of the government, but the only thing we can really say for sure is that punters are split as to what will happen next.
