Fine Gael Poll Slump Sees Odds Of Election Win Slide

Fine Gael have seen their odds on winning the next Irish general election eased after a new poll suggested a slump in support amongst the public.

The Sunday Business Post/Red C poll put Fine Gael down five points to 28%, their lowest rating for a year and a half. Fianna Fáil meanwhile went up a point to 24%, resulting in a new burst of money for Michéal Martin’s party to go on and win the most seats at the next election.

BoyleSports now rate Fianna Fáil at just 11/8 from 2/1 to take most seats, with Fine Gael drifting to 8/15 from 1/3. Leo Varadkar remains the favourite to be the Taoiseach after the next visit to the ballot box, but he is now just 4/9 from 1/4 as he continues to field questions about the national broadband plan.

Michéal Martin’s odds on becoming the Taoiseach after the next election have shortened also as he is now into 2/1 from 7/2, but he’ll have to wait until next year to get a shot at it if the betting is anything to go by, as the election is odds-on at 4/6 to take place in 2020.
