Irish Border Poll Backed To Be Held Before 2021

A referendum on Irish unity has been backed by punters today after Mary Lou McDonald’s latest comments on the constitutional future of the country.

The Sinn Féin President made headlines earlier in the week when she said that a ‘crash Brexit’ would not be the ideal backdrop for a border poll, but in a subsequent statement, she insisted that ‘the chaos of the Tory Brexit will not delay a referendum on Irish unity.’

Before the recent referendum on the Eighth Amendment, BoyleSports were offering 5/1 about a border poll happening before 2021, but the odds shortened into 3/1 following the result. There has been a further spike in the betting this week following ex-DUP leader Peter Robinson’s suggestion that preparations should be made for the possibility of a united Ireland.

The chances of a Sinn Féin/Fine Gael coalition after the next Irish General Election has also piqued the interest of punters this week and has closed into 9/2 from 5/1 off the back of the recent money.

Mary-Lou McDonald has made headlines with her comments on the topic of a border poll this week but it’s Peter Robinson’s intervention from the Unionist side that we suspect is sparking the bets on an Irish unity referendum happening within the next three years. If the liabilities continue to rise in the coming days

we may be forced to make it any even more likely prospect than the 3/1 out there now.
