Odds Narrowly Favour Boris Johnson In No Confidence Vote

Boris Johnson is still an odds-on shot to be Prime Minister on the first day of 2023 despite facing an imminent vote of no confidence in the House of Commons.

The Prime Minister has rejected calls to resign from opposition parties and from some of his own MPs over the ‘partygate’ scandal which saw him fined for breaching lockdown rules in Number 10.

It was announced on Monday morning that a secret ballot on his leadership had been triggered after at least 54 Conservative MPs submitted no confidence letters to Sir Graham Brady, Chairman of the 1922 committee of backbench MPs.

But the latest odds are marginally in favour of Johnson, who is widely expected to survive the vote despite the rebellion from a significant number of backbench Tories.

We rate him an odds-on 8/11 shot in the betting to still be PM beyond the end of this year

…although that price had been much shorter at 1/3 just last week.

The chances of him being replaced in 2022 are slightly larger, despite being trimmed into 11/10 from 2/1 on Monday.

Former leadership candidate Jeremy Hunt, who confirmed he would be voting against Johnson and urged fellow MPs to follow suit, has also been the subject of a gamble as he has fallen into 5/1 from 10/1 to be the next Prime Minister, making him the new favourite ahead of Keir Starmer (11/2).
