Sinn Féin Gambled Into Favourites To Win Next General Election

Sinn Féin will be in a strong position to go into government after the next general election if the betting is to be believed after markets for the next vote opened this week.

Mary Lou McDonald unveiled on Thursday the frontbench TDs who will lead the opposition, vowing that her team will provide and “constructive and critical opposition” to the government and warning ministers that they will “have to be on their toes.”

But if the early money is anything to go by, Sinn Féin TDs could be filing cabinet positions following the next general election after they were gambled into favourites as soon as the betting opened this week.

BoyleSports initially chalked both Fine Gael and Sinn Féin up as 6/4 joint frontrunners to win most seats after the next election, but the latter has already been cut into 11/10 stand-alone favourites having attracted the bulk of support to come out on top next time out.

Leader Mary Lou McDonald is now just 2/1 from 7/2 to be the Taoiseach after the next visit to the ballot box, while rotating incumbent Micheál Martin is out at 6/1 to lead the country after the next election.

Punters clearly think that in opposition, Sinn Féin are well placed to sweep up at the next election and they have dominated the betting.
