WORLD CUP GROUP STAGE FORMAT

The group stages of the World Cup are played in a round-robin format. This means that each team plays the other three teams in their group once.

The two teams with the most points from each group will qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament. If two teams are tied on points, then the team with the better goal difference will advance. If two teams are also tied on goal difference, then goals scored is used to decide who goes through to the knockout phase.

The winner of group G will play the second placed team in group H in the round of 16. Meanwhile, the second placed team in group G will play the winner of group H in the round of 16.

WHAT ARE THE WORLD CUP GROUP G STADIUMS?

There are three stadiums which will host the six group G games at the World Cup.

The Al Wakrah Sports Complex in Al-Janoub will host two of the games in group G. Meanwhile, the Lusail Stadium in Lusail and Ras Abu Aboud’s Stadium 974 will also host two games each in the group.

WORLD CUP GROUP G PREDICTION

GROUP G WINNER – Brazil @ 1/3

It is hard to see past this Brazil side coming out on top of group G in this World Cup. The Brazilians are the top ranked side in world football right now and with the likes of Neymar, Vinicius Jr., Antony and Richarlison in their team they will be hard beaten.

In terms of form, this team have won seven out of their last seven games. Not only have they won these games but they have been dominant in their wins too. Their goals difference in these games is a staggering +24. They’ve played decent teams too with four of those seven teams that they beat competing in Qatar’s World Cup.

When we talk about World Cup pedigree then there isn’t a footballing nation that can touch Brazil. The South Americans have the most tournament wins in World Cup history with five titles.

The last time they failed to qualify from the group stages was all the way back in 1966 so this country can be expected to perform well in Qatar based on current and historic performances.

The group draw was quite favourable to the Brazilians so I would expect them to qualify top of the group here with either seven or nine points. They should beat Cameroon comfortably.

Don’t be shocked if either Serbia or Switzerland can steal a draw against them but I’d still expect at least four points from these two games so they should comfortably qualify top of this group.

GROUP G 2ND PLACE – SERBIA TO QUALIFY @ 11/10

Serbia and Switzerland look like the most likely to finish runners-up in group G but I quite fancy the Serbians to pip the Swiss for qualification here.

This Serbian squad are in great form coming into this tournament. They are unbeaten in their last five matches with four wins and a draw. They also have only suffered two losses in their last ten international games.

In fact, the Serbians finished ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in their qualifying group for this tournament.

Serbia do not have a strong FIFA World Cup track record having never qualified past the group stages in four attempts. This country used to be part of Yugoslavia however, who regularly advanced to the quarter and semi-final stages of the tournament.

Coincidentally, Serbia were in the same World Cup group as Brazil and Switzerland in 2018 too. On that occasion, the Serbians were narrowly pipped for the second qualification spot by Switzerland thanks to a 90th-minute Shaqiri game-winner when the two teams went head-to-head.

When they play Brazil I think they have an outside chance of getting a draw but it is more likely that Brazil win that game. Their match against Cameroon is one that they should win and I would expect them to get that result.

Then, it would all come down to their game against Switzerland and this time around I think they can make amends for 2018 and beat the Swiss to qualify for the knockout rounds.

GROUP G 3RD PLACE – SWITZERLAND NOT TO QUALIFY @ 8/11

Switzerland come into this World Cup with some impressive wins of recent but also some bad losses too. In terms of wins, they beat Spain 2-1 in the Nations League this September. They beat Portugal 1-0 in the same competition too.

Portugal had beaten them resoundingly 4-0 a couple months earlier however. They also had a loss to Spain and another to the Czech Republic in the Nations League earlier in the year which makes this Swiss team very hard to predict. They can be quite inconsistent on the international stage.

As mentioned earlier, Switzerland were in the very same group as both Brazil and Serbia in the 2018 World Cup. That year they qualified second in the group after securing four points, including a win against the Serbians.

In this World Cup I expect the Serbians to get their revenge on Switzerland which would mean they would need to get a result against a Brazil team that are the best team in the tournament according to the betting odds. My prediction is for this Switzerland team to finish with three points which would see them miss out on qualification.

GROUP G 4TH PLACE – CAMEROON NOT TO QUALIFY @ 1/5

Cameroon are the underdogs in this group and it is easy to see why. They will struggle against Brazil and the two European teams of Serbia and Switzerland also look like they will give them a lot of trouble.

This is a proud footballing nation that have produced star footballers like Samuel Eto’o who was one of the best strikers in the world during the 2000’s and early 2010’s. Unfortunately, the national squad hasn’t been able to have success at the World Cup in recent times.

Cameroon have not qualified out of the group stages of this tournament since 1990. They would need to pull off quite the upset to qualify this time around with the group that they have been drawn in.

Their game with Brazil will surely end in defeat while Serbia and Switzerland are also tough matchups for this team. Could they get a surprise result against either Serbia or Switzerland? Sure, but it still wouldn’t be enough to get them through to the knockout rounds so I think bottom of this group is the most likely result for Cameroon.
