Rich Beem: “Players Who Opt Into Saudi-Tour Should Be Banned From Ryder Cup!”
The USPGA Championship 2022 kicks off this week & we caught up with 2002 Champion Rich Beem, to discuss all things golf.
Rich expressed his dismay towards the LIV series taking place in Saudi Arabia & spoke in detail about his feelings towards Phil Mickelson, speaking to BoyleSports.
RICH BEEM: DON’T BUY INTO GREG NORMAN AT ALL, BUT WHY WOULDN’T THESE PLAYERS TRY AND GET MORE MONEY?
“Is the Saudi-tour good for golf? I don’t know if it’s bad for golf.”
“I don’t agree with Greg Norman saying that he‘s growing the game in Saudi Arabia. I don’t buy that at all.”
“If he shows me some proof then maybe I’d buy into it. As far as it being good for the game, if it wasn’t for money they wouldn’t have anything.
“They wouldn’t have a series or anything, but it is a substantial amount of money and I can completely understand why certain players wouldn’t go and join those players for the guarantee of money.”
“It’d be wise for any player after their best days have gone by. If I was 45 years old and I had the opportunity, I’d have to do some soul searching.”
RICH BEEM: PLAYERS WHO OPT IN TO SAUDI-TOUR SHOULD BE BANNED FROM RYDER CUP
“I think if players play in the LIV series, they should be banned from the Ryder Cup.”
“They will be banned from their respective tours at some point. I think they’ve made that perfectly clear and hats off to them as it draws a line in the sand because it means they cannot be part of it anymore and there’s nothing wrong with that.”
RICH BEEM: PHIL MICKELSON MUST BECOME PERFECT CITIZEN TO REDEEM HIMSELF
“Mickelson needs to become a model to redeem himself.”
“If the PGA tour is where your allegiance is then he needs to apologise to every single player on the range.”
“There are a lot more things to the PGA tour aside from the money they’re paid for.”
“What was printed by Alan Shipnuck. I want to hear exactly what he said as the written word is so different from the spoken word.”
“I want to know exactly what the context is because it’s hard to comment on Phil as he’s always been a unique character.”
RICH BEEM: MICKELSON RETURNING FOR PGA CHAMPIONSHIP WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN A GOOD MOVE
“I was even a little surprised to see him commit to it. You need to make sure you get everything sorted out on your planet before you come to play golf.”
“This wasn’t the place to come back because let’s face it, the media were going to roast him.”
“I don’t know when he’ll be back but I really hope it’s not for the Centurion LIV series event but if he is, that’s the path he’s chosen.”
“I don’t think coming back for a major would have been a good move.”
RICH BEEM: LET’S FACE IT, PHIL IS DOING THIS FOR MONEY
“Let’s face it, if he does go to the Centurion LIV it’s for money. If that’s where he’s going to hang his hat then I wish him the best of luck but we may not see him for a long time.
RICH BEEM: I DON’T TRUST ALAN SHIPNUCK
“I don’t trust Alan Shipnuck. It’s nothing personal but I don’t trust what he writes and he just tries to sensationalise everything.
“That’s just my personal opinion.”
