Seeley’s Selections – Tuesday’s Champions League

Champions, Manchester City, entertain Bayern Munich on Tuesday night in a must win Champions League Group E clash at the Ethiad.

City have been dreadful in this season’s competition and anything but a win will see them exit the competition at the group stages…. yet again. City are 11/5 with Boylesports to get the victory they desperately need but Manuel Pellegrini’s side have just won two of their last nine home Champions League matches.

They were truly shocking in the 2-1 home defeat to CSKA Moscow in their last Champions League appearance and ended that game with with just nine men on the pitch. If they are to overcome Boylesports’ 3/1 joint Champions League favourites, they will have to do so without the suspended duo of Fernandinho and Yaya Toure…a tough ask.

These two sides are no strangers to each other; this will be the sixth Champions League meeting in the last three seasons. So far the Germans lead 3-2 but this could be a really good time to face Munich and I’m quietly confident that City can get the win they need.

Bayern Munich are 23/20 favourites with Boylesports to win here and end City’s European hopes and with 11 wins from their last 12 matches they will prove very popular with Boylesports punters.

Pep Guardiola’s side have already qualified for the knock-out stages and when they have been in this position before they have rested key players and gone on to lose matches.

I do think this well be a very entertaining match-up as City have to take the game to the best counter attacking side in Europe. It’s impossible not to see a lot of goals with all the attacking flair on show and both teams to score has to be a serious wager in this one at Boylesports’ 4/7 – which you may want to put into the midweek “BTTS coupon”.

In last season’s clashes both teams scored in each games and the two games featured nine goals and in City’s last 10 games, both teams have scored in eight. I really think this could be a European classic and I’m taking City to edge a thriller 3-2 at a juicy 22/1 with Boylesports.

In Tuesday night’s other big Champions League match, Roberto Di Matteo comes face to face with his former club on when his Schalke side host the team he won the Champions League with Chelsea at the impressive Veltins-Arena.

Di Matteo will need to mastermind another European masterclass if he can inflict the first defeat on the Premier League side this season, which might be beyond him but I don’t think this will be as easy as the Boylesports odds compilers suggest.

Chelsea are now unbeaten in 18 matches this season and eased to a 2-0 victory over another former Di Matteo club, West Brom, at the weekend, but I don’t think they will have it all their own way on Tuesday night. The Blues struggled in their 1-1 draw with Schalke at Stamford Bridge earlier in the Champions League campaign and there is no value in them in the odds on quotes of 5/6 which is available with Boylesports.

Schalke were in a shocking run of form when they first met, but now with the Di Matteo factor and their form a lot better coming into this one, this will be Chelsea’s biggest test of the season. I think this will be a very close encounter, unlike the football boffins at Boylesports, and a draw will suit both sides. I like the look of the stalemate in this one at a very generous 11/4 with Boylesports which will take both sides a step closer to the knock-out stages.

One thing Mourinho will be very confident of is his team’s chances of scoring in this one. Schalke have been conceding goals for fun in recent weeks, they have leaked 11 goals in their last six games, but they have no problem at the other end scoring 10 in the same period. I like Both Teams to Score in this one at 3/4 with Boylesports. You would have collected in every single one of Schalke’s Champions League games so far this season on this market and there is no reason to suggest that you won’t again on Tuesday.

The Chelsea defence marshalled by the excellent John Terry and Gary Cahill hasn’t been getting the plaudits it has deserved this season, but no single player has caused them more problems than Schalke’s Klass-Jan Huntelaar.

The Dutch international was a constant menace at the Bridge and grabbed the German’s equaliser and he’s bagged three goals in his four Champions League appearances this season. He’s 5/1 with Boylesports to open the scoring but I would rather take the Boylesports offer of 29/20 on him scoring in the 90 minutes.
