The Offaly man went into the third and final round two shots adrift of the lead, but his 65 on Sunday was his third bogey-free round of the week and enough to see off the challenge of Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy by a shot.

Lowry, who broke his major duck at the 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush, is already shortening in the early betting for the 2023 majors, with the chances of him landing a second career major now down to 6/1 from 8/1 with BoyleSports.

The chances of Lowry being the first Irish golfer to don the green jacket at The Masters have been backed down to 28/1 from 33/1 and he has also been clipped into 20/1 from 25/1 to pick up a second Claret Jug when The Open takes centre stage at Hoylake next July.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said: “Shane Lowry was playing solidly all year and the faith of Irish punters was rewarded at Wentworth because he’d been well backed leading up to tee off.

Now they’re looking ahead to next year’s majors and we’ve had to cut him into 6/1 from 8/1 to win one of the big four, so there is confidence he’ll be mixing it with the best again in 2023.”
