It would be the second time for the Offaly man, who went into the third and final round two shots adrift of the lead, but his 65 on Sunday was his third bogey-free round of the week and enough to see off the challenge of Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy by a shot.
BoyleSports traders reported on Wednesday morning that the chances of Lowry being crowned the RTÉ SPOTY winner were hammered into 50/1 from 200/1 with plenty of local support arriving.
Lowry was crowned the winner of the RTÉ award in 2019 after winning the 148th Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club but a second title could be on the way according to the latest betting odds.
Rory McIlroy is 20/1 to win the award for the third time after his odds were cut in from 100/1.
The Holywood man has had a successful year on the course with top 8 finishes in all four majors and ended the tour season on a high when winning the FedEx Cup finale in Atlanta, walking off the $18m winner’s cheque.
Sarah Kinsella, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “Two golfers are being well-supported to win the RTÉ award this year with Shane Lowry the latest name to be backed.
“He won the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth on Sunday ended a three-year winless drought. We now make the Offaly man 50/1 from 200/1 to win the RTÉ SPOTY crown with McIlroy a 20/1 shot.”
