The Form – Wales vs Iran Prediction

Wales’ Form

Wales come into this game off the back of a 1-1 draw with the USA in their opening game. That draw was crucial for the Welsh and came courtesy of a late Gareth Bale penalty.

In the end, they were deserving of a point after they bounced back from a poor first half to boss proceedings in the second period. They will need a win in this game to put themselves in with a great chance of advancing to the next round.

Wales changed their tactics at half-time against the USA and they might have found something with the change. This team struggled for form coming into this World Cup so that opening result will set them up with confidence for this game against Iran.

Iran’s Form

We all saw Iran’s humiliating 6-2 opening round World Cup defeat at the hands of England. The defeat against England wasn’t a surprise but the manner of the loss will be seriously hard for Iran to come back from.

If they are to have any hopes at qualification they will need a result from this game.

Previous to the England game Iran had only lost one out of their last five games with three draws and one win in the other four. The Iranians will feel like they can get a result going into this game against Wales.

How The Two Teams Match Up – Wales vs Iran Prediction

Wales’ Attack

The main threat in this Wales attack is of course Gareth Bale. The star striker has always showed up for his country on the big occasions and the last game against the USA was no different with his penalty goal.

Wales manager Rob Page has a decision to make over whether he wants to start Dan James again alongside Bale or if Kieffer Moore will get the nod. Moore was brilliant for the Welsh after he replaced James at halftime as he was able to hold the ball up allowing the team to transition from defence to attack.

The Dragons should have more possession in this game with Iran not having the same quality in the middle of the pitch as the United States.

Iran’s Defence

Iran’s defence is an obvious area of weakness after conceding six goals against England in their opening game. Luckily for the Iranians, Wales don’t have the same level of talent in attack as the English.

This Iran team lined up in a 4-3-3 formation last time out and their defence struggled greatly in that system. They might try and change to something like a 4-1-4-1 formation which we have seen from them in previous games to thelp out their defenders against Wales.

I think Wales will once again set up to play on the counterattack and should create some good chances this way against Iran here.

Iran’s Attack

Iran lack for firepower up front and the late penalty goal they scored against England might give the impression that this attack is better than they actually are.

Coming into this tournament Iran had only scored four goals in their previous four games for an average of one goal per game. With the five-back, low block formation that Wales like to set up in it is hard to see Iran creating many decent opportunities in this game.

Wales’ Defence

As mentioned before, Wales like to regularly play with eight or nine men behind the ball when their opponents are in possession. The USA were only able to get one shot on target against this Wales defence despite dominating possession.

The USA have much more quality in their attacking ranks than Iran so you figure if the US struggled to create chances against Wales, then Iran will find it even harder.

Wales vs Iran Prediction and Best Bet

The best bet I’ve picked out here is Wales to win 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1 boosted to 15/8 from 7/4. I expect this to be a cagey affair, but Wales look like the better side and should pull through in the end.

Wales vs Iran Prediction – Goalscorer Betting Odds

Bale to score first at 7/2 looks like the best bet in the goalscorer betting market. He scored against the USA in the last game and will take all the penalties and free kicks for this Welsh side.

If you fancy Iran to get the first goal, then FC Porto striker Mehdi Taremi is worth a look at 11/2 to score the game’s first goal.
