Our odds makers have Argentina as the clear second favourites in the World Cup winner betting market at odds of 13/8. The only team ahead of them in the betting are France.

Both teams started off the tournament as joint second-favourites but the French have been more impressive in their route to the semi-final stage of this World Cup.

How Good Are Argentina?

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni and his team are currently the third-ranked nation in the FIFA world rankings. Argentina’s last performance at the FIFA World Cup was quite a disappointing one when they were knocked out in the round of 16 by eventual champions France following a 4-3 loss.

Argentina’s squad strength and their current run of form make them deserving of the second favourites tag for this World Cup. Argentina also ended up as winners in the last major tournament they played in at the 2021 Copa America where they beat Brazil 1-0 in the final.

The star player for Argentina is of course one of football’s all-time greats in Lionel Messi. ‘La Pulga’ as he is known by his fans has been in fantastic form for his club PSG this season. He has four goals in five Champions League games along with seven goals and ten assists in Ligue 1.

This will be Messi’s last World Cup so make sure you get to your TV screen to watch the little magician for one last time at the FIFA World Cup.

In previous World Cups Messi has had little talent around him when playing for his country but that is by no means the case nowadays. Some of the other stars on this team are Angel Di Maria of Juventus, Lautaro Martinez of Inter Milan and Lisandro Martinez of Manchester United.

This Argentine side have fulfilled on their promise in this World Cup so far and it has been the magical Messi leading the way. Julian Alvarez of Man City has also been brilliant up front after replacing Lautaro Martinez as a starter.

Argentina have won two FIFA World Cups in their entire history. The first of those World Cup wins came when they hosted the event in 1978 as they went on to beat the Netherlands 3-1 in the final. Their most recent tournament victory came in Mexico’s 1986 World Cup. They were led by the Argentine legend Diego Armando Maradona on that occasion as they saw off West Germany in the final 3-2.

It is now 36 years since that World Cup win and this footballing giant will feel that they are due another title this year in Qatar. Lionel Messi will feel that it is in his destiny to repeat his idol Maradona’s feat in 1986 and lead his country to World Cup glory.
